Today my aunt called me and told me that a baby had been kidnapped from our local hospital I couldnt believe it. I mean how do you kidnap a baby from a hospital and not be seen leaving the hospital with the baby. How did they get past the nurses and into the nursery without being seen? the bad thing is that There is supposed to be a nurser in the nursery at all times and the other bad thing is that the elevators are right in front of the nurses station and that is the only way they could have gotten out of the hospital with the baby because the doors to the stairs stay locked with an alarm on them and the only people that can use the stairs are the employees who have a code to unlock the doors and temporarily deactivate the alarm. It turns out that the couple that kidnapped the baby was the parents of the baby but they didnt have custody. 2 days ago this 25 year old girl who was and is still on drugs gave birth to this baby and the baby was born addicted to drugs and is sick. Well when the baby was born the Social Services was called and the baby was taken out of the girls custody and put into the custody of Social services. This girl and her boyfriend who is also the daddy of the baby decided they were going to kidnap their baby from the hospital and leave town with her so Social services couldnt have the baby. They ended up catching them and taking the baby back to the hospital in an ambulance. They arrested the parents and charged them with a felony. I havent heard anything about the baby yet so I dont know what condition the baby is in at the moment. I think I have decided that if/when I get pregnant again I am not going to go to that hospital but the bad thing about that is that the only other closest hospital is 45 minutes away. Anyway thanks for listening to me vent. It frustrates me so bad that this happened. These people should have never gotten out of that hospital with that baby.

That is a crazy story. I don't blame you for not wanting to have your baby there someday. I have several friends that are ped nurses at a hospital here and there is absolutely no way to get out without being seen. Especially carrying a baby. I hope someone gets in trouble b/c it shouldn't be easy to grab a baby and leave. Makes me angry.
I am glad they were caught and I hope that baby gets healthy and is placed in a loving home very soon.

I hope that the baby gets healthy and is placed in a loving home soon to. That is what bothers me the most. This baby who is innocent in all of this was brought into this world to parents who dont care. It makes me so ugh

That is scary! The hospital by my house has the sensors like they have in stores for anti-theft purposes, and all the babies have little magnetized anklets on, so that if someone tries to leave with a baby an alarm sounds. The fact that they have to put things like that in is really sad to me though.

My dad is in charge of safety and security at a hospital - one of the things he is in charge of is the safety of the nursery and making sure that babies can't be stolen from the hospital. They use those ankle bracelets on the babies where if they get too close to the doors on the L&D floor, alarms start going off. They have hand scanners to get into the nursery that are so sensitive, say if you had your hand scanned with acrylic nails originally and then a few months later you decided to go natural with your nails - your next hand scan wouldn't work because it would notice a difference!
This is going to sound so bad (and somewhat funny) but my dad used to have me test the alarms once in a while. I would literally have a backpack with a baby doll in it, with one of the ankle bracelets on. I would have to test the sensitivity of the bracelet to see if when it would go off, how far from the door, how far I was to the other side of the door before it started going off. Or if we could wrap something around the foot of the "baby" to see if the bracelet would be less sensitive on the doors. Also had to test how soon security or nurses responded to the door alarms. And my favorite part - I had to walk around L&D with the backpack on to see if I got stopped by any nurses or any of his security guards to ask me if I was lost, needed help, what was up with the backpack, etc.
Sounds like someone is going to be in trouble. Its amazing with something so simple (like the ankle bracelet) the hospital isn't using it. I thought that was standard procedure.

This hospital around here isnt high tech enough aparently. I dont like this hospital and never have but I have settled with it because this is all we have but now that this has happened I am willing to drive the extra 45 minutes to the other hospital...... It is frightening to think that something like this could happen.

I bet you they will have the ankle bracelets after that incident. My dad's hospital is a HUGE hospital (one of the biggest where I grew up and moved from) and they got the ankle bracelets....maybe 10 years ago if not later.
I just can't believe they got past all the people they would have to walk right past, without suspicions!
Hopefully the little baby wont suffer any longterm effects. This definitely isn't going to help their case of getting their baby back, even if they do get clean.

I hate my hospital but it's very unlikely that could happen here which I'm grateful for. I hope the baby is ok.

The hospitals here, well at least the one my cousin had her baby at, have the ankle bracelets. When I had my d&c (different hospital), it was in the L&D area and the door cannot be opened from either side without a card + code, or the nurse unlocking the door with a button at the nurses station. So you can't get in or out. Its good they caught them!!

Wow, I have no idea what the security is like here, guess that will be on my list, and may also push me to the birthing center.

We had Wyatt at a great hospital. They had all the security systems and security measures in place. Except....when we went to take him from the hospital they realized his little ankle band alert thing had not ever been set and did not work. Thank god nothing happened. I would kill people for my little man!

Where I had my kids they have the alert braclets as well. The elevators are right in front of the nurses desk and someone is always there asking why your there. Where my sister had her babies, they have a door you have to be buzzed in.
That hospital (where the incident happened) will probably be putting alot of $ into security from now on. How scarey. If the parents wanted the baby so bad, why didn't she get off the drugs? I know it's a REALLY hard thing to do, but they have so many programs out there...she had 9 months! I've never been adicted to drugs, so I guess I can't talk.

The only thing I can think of is that the baby wasn't "real" to her until she actually held it in her arms. And then she realized she didn't want anything else. I'm just guessing - I've never been addicted to drugs before.

Wow, that's insane!!!
It would definitely make me re-think my choice of hospitals too. Like you said, someone is always in the nursery, etc.
I wouldn't allow the docs to put my baby in the nursery, she/he would always be in my room if I had a choice in it!
