Dh came home for lunch today. He walks in the door and says that he's probably going to get laid off. That company is the only company around here that was actually doing well but now there are rumours going around that something got screwed up and 90% of the orders have been cancelled. I say they are rumours because he can't talk to the owner because he's not around because he's off trying to get more orders. Apparntly there have been a lot of meetings and there's a lot of tension there. I told him he needs to find out somehow what is going on because I am really sick and tired of being lied to by his employers. The company he worked for before this on was having a bit of a hard time in 2007 and they kept telling the employees that no one was getting laid off, that it wouldn't happen, that there was no way. A couple days after dh was told he would not lose his job he called me and said him and 2 other guys were getting laid off. We had just bought a brand new car. Now we've just bought a house and the same thing seems to be happening again. Nothing has been confirmed yet but he can see it coming and so can a bunch of other guys. I don't know who will be the first to go... I'm trying so hard not to freak out right now but I don't know what we'll do. He said his vacation pay and his profit sharing will be safe but I don't believe that and even if it is it's not enough to keep us from being completely screwed over. I keep telling myself that we'd be in just as much trouble if we didn't own a house because renting costs about $700 a month more than what we are paying for our mortgage and we have to have somewhere to live so we're actually in a better place with our low mortgage payment... I really shouldn't be thinking about this since nothings been confirmed but dh is having me update his resume and looking online for jobs... stupid economy.
Please send us your good thoughts ladies, we need them. Also please hope that we are worrying for nothing...

First of all I hope his feeling is wrong but I understand where his fears stem from.
My BF lost his job in February due to downsizing. He finally found another job but took a 30K a year paycut. We worried while he was out of work but knew that eventually it would all work out in the end.
The economy is scary right now and bad things are happening to good people. I know it is hard but try to relax as much as you can, and have faith that it will all be ok. Try to see where you can save money in your budget now just in case it does happen. I fully understand why you are worried and how it can devastate you. Hug him a lot, as a man society dictates that he is the bread winner. He is probably feeling like he is letting you down too. Trust in his judgment when he says his vacation/profit sharing are ok.
(((Hugs))) I know what you are going through is rough.

I hope that his fears are wrong.
My DH got laid off in Feb. and is still looking. It's not a good time to be looking, but I'm hopeful that he'll find something that he liked even better.

Well it happened. He came home and he's got 1 week notice. As of next monday (4th) we have no income. He's going to go to the ui office tomorrow and hopefully we'll have enough to get us through a month at least. He already went to talk to his old boss at the place he used to work before and they are optimistic about being able to hire someone and hopefully that someone will be him. 4 other guys got laid off also and there will be more next week and then probably by the end of the month everyone will be gone. We haven't decided what we are going to do... he is thinking about making a career change. He's been wanting to join the RCMP for awhile but he doesn't know for sure if he wants to do it. He said absolutly no to stopping ttc and that he would work 5 crap jobs if thats what it takes to be able to have another baby but don't worry I would never let him do it. We have a few ideas of what we could do... rent out the house and go back to Vancouver, he could go to Vancouver alone (but they have swine flu around there) or he could go to another province. I could try and get a student loan and go to school but I don't know if it's possible with me being a homeowner... I don't know. We have a lot of brainstorming to do. I sure wish they had given us more than a week or at least a bit of warning that this could happen. Literally every time things start going really well for us something happens and shoots it all to heck.
Update: Dh is going to the ui office after work to talk to them about being on ui while going after a career in the RCMP. If he can't get on ui or it isn't enough he's going to try to get a job where he used to work or a crap job at wal-mart or wherever. We're hoping on the ui because it'll be enough to get by as long as I do a lot of cutting in the budget which means no more cable (we just got it about a month ago after never having it since we moved in together 6 years ago), no more internet unless one of our neighbours will share their signal with us and no phone... we can't afford a cell phone and with the bills that we absolutly have to pay we can't afford a phone for awhile. My parents don't live too far away so we can use their house as a contact point for job/doctor calls... If I can get someone to hire me for the hours I'm available I'll get a job but so far no one is very acceptable of limited available hours (daycare is out of the question since it costs more than I could possibly bring in which is why I don't already have a job) We'll park the truck and take the insurance off, no more spending money and no more saving. With all that we'll get by paying the mortgage, strata fees, some gas for the van (the insurance is paid off on the van until june or july), electric and a limited food budget. It'll be just like it was when he made $8 an hour and we managed to get by then so hopefully we can manage it again for a bit. Dh is going to attend a career presentation for the RCMP at the beginning of may and then take an aptitude test towards the end of may and if he can manage to get through that there are a bunch more steps and if he gets through those he'll be going to training camp for 24 weeks that he'll get paid for so at that point we will get off ui and if he gets through camp he'll be emplyed at a good salary with regular raises after 36(?) months. We probably won't get to choose where we go but hopefully since we live in a small town they'll send us to another small town... Anyway thats part of our plan. It's not set in stone because we still have to figure out for sure where our temporary income will come from and since we're losing our healthcare we'll have to figure out how to pay for provincial healthcare. We really hope the RCMP thing works out because we don't have a plan b yet... He's most likely not going to stay in his current trade but he doesn't know what to change to if not the RCMP.
Please send us good wishes.
