So today I had yet another follow up with a different midwife. This one is way more proactive...and I explained to her that I was STILL bleeding and still testing positive on a pregnancy test. She actually outlined a plan for us to take and gave us all of our options. I am finally starting to feel better about what is going on - I told her we wanted to TTC ASAP and wanted to be very proactive from the start as far as getting through our miscarriage process and we both feel that everything is moving so slow. So this is our plan....

Since I'm still bleeding and still getting a +hpt, as we all know it means there is still something in there. So she gave me cytotec to insert and some tylenol with codeine to take for the pain. I will be using the cytotec tomorrow morning. I will be watching to see if anything comes out at all. This is something to try to do while I am waiting for Tuesday, instead of just sitting around all weekend waiting for the ultrasound.

Tuesday I have an appointment for an ultrasound to see if we can see anything there. I'm supposed to ask for the midwife on call to come ask for the results, so we don't have to wait another day for the results to be viewed and get a call back. If there is something still there, I will be scheduled for the D&C, probably for the end of next week.

While I am waiting for the D&C, I also have the option of taking cytotec again to try and expel whatever is in there. I really really really don't want a D&C, the idea terrifies me.

So anyways...does anyone have an war stories from taking cytotec? I'm supposed to insert it vaginally...its setting up to be a great weekend.

Good luck.. Just wanted to say a d&c really isn't that bad. The worst part for me was the IV and blood taking before hand. Afterwards I had hardly any bleeding and it wasn't that painful kinda like af cramps.. and my uterus felt a little strange for a week or so.

I haven't had to use cytotec, but wanted to give you a
I hope it all expels this weekend for you so you don't have to have a D&C, they scare me too.

Heather, I hope it works! Glad to hear you got a more proactive midwife! I have never heard of the drug though, sorry.

Hey, honey. I'm so glad that you found someone who will work with you!

I know that a few of the ladies on the PL forum have used Cytotec, but I don't remember what their experiences were like. I hope that it works quickly and with as little pain as possible, and your ultrasound on Tueday shows that everything is gone.

Thinking of you. *HUGS*

I've had medicaton inserted to start the m/c. Mine was called Misoprostol, but it's probably the same thing. It thins the cervix and starts contractions to expell. I had to take it a few times. The first day I took it nothing much happened. just some bleeding and a bit of cramping. I had to repeat the next day and that's when I felt like I was in labour. It wasn't that bad really, once the 'contractions' stopped I started passing clots and lots of blood and within a couple of hours I had passed the baby. I only had to take the Tylenol 3 once. It was more emotional pain at that point. I did have a clot left over that was causing me some pain, so I had to repeat again a week later and basically the nurse told me that if nothing was left inside, the pain and bleeding wouldn't be bad at all. She was right. This time I felt nothing and the bleeding was just like a period for a few days.
I'm glad you have an action plan and are getting a follow up. Whatever you do, stay home after you take the meds and don't go anywhere for a few hours, in case the bleeding starts. (I was at a specialist appointment with my kids when I was passing all the blood and tissues, and it wasn't fun)

Just wanted to add that even though I originally wanted the D&C and was denied, I am glad that I did it the natural way. It was hard emotionally, but I think my body handled it pretty well and I've heard that recovery is quicker.

Good luck this weekend. I hope everything works out soon so that you can move back to TTC again. I think that after the shock of my m/c was gone the next worst feeling was the waiting to TTC again.

As a side note, no one likes surgery. Everyone is different and you have to do what is right for your body. With both of my m/c the right thing for me was a D&C. I had no complications and recovered quickly. You will get a wide range of opinions on the whole thing. Do what is right for you and trust your midwife.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted...

I am thinking of you.. I am sorry your having to continue this and wait.. I never tried the cytotec. I lost at 15 weeks and had to have a d & e done... there was no bleeding after and I was out cold for the procedure. As far as they told me everything went really well... I know it all takes time, and it will never go away.. I found it got worse before better, but finally after a couple of months I am starting to come to terms and learn I have to live with my loss and hopefully will conceive here soon!!

That's good new that someone is willing to sit with your and explore all options. I also just wanted to chime in, that is they decide a D&C may be best for you, it really isn't bad at all. I was terrified at the idea too, but I also barely bled after and didn't have any pain at all.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice ladies.

I know I may end up having a D&C...but if I can do something while I'm waiting for the ultrasound and then waiting for a potential D&C, I'm all for it.

Unfortunately...I inserted 3 pills (600 mg total) of Cytotec (also called misoprostol) at 1 pm. I did take 1 tylenol 3 about 30 minutes prior to that, just in case. Annnnd I've got nothing. No cramping, no increase in bleeding. Nothing. I'm wondering if I should wait another hour and then call the midwife on call to see if maybe I need another dose tomorrow? It should take effect within 4 hours.

Hi Heather... thinking about you. How are you doing today? I also had a d/c after waiting over a week.... (with no medication to help it along).. After the week I went in for the d/e. The worst part for me.. was the anxiety. I work in a hospital I know the routine, but still it was hard. It was painless, and I recovered quickly. For me a d/e was the right thing. I just wanted to give you my experiance. HUGS
