about a week and a half ago my husbands cousin found out she is pregnant. She is about 5 weeks along according to her LMP but I think she had implantation bleeding on the 19th of April when she spotted a small amount of pink blood. She has spotted twice since then, she spotted once two days ago and it was just pinkish and she spotted again at around 4 oclock this morning and it was red. She got worried about the spotting and went to the emergency room and they did an ultrasound on her (it wasnt a vaginal ultrasound it was the other type) and the tech that was doing the ultrasound told her that he could see the gestational sac and it measured 5 weeks and that everything looked to be fine. Well after she got the ultrasound done the Dr came in and told her that she has had an incomplete miscarriage because they couldnt see a heartbeat or a fetal pole and she needed to see her DR tomorrow. Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that the gestational sac is all they would be able to see at 5 weeks of pregnancy. According to the internet the heartbeat and fetal pole cant be seen until about 7 or 8 weeks and the yolk sac cant be seen until 6 weeks. Also wouldnt her HCG levels be low? Her levels are twenty three thousand nine hundred 23,900. I thought that was a good level it is actually higher than what it should be for 5 weeks according to the chart I found on the internet. What do you ladies think? I think she should get a second opinion.

I would defiantly get a second opinion! That is crazy. They shouldn't be able to see a heartbeat yet!

I would definitely hold tight and go back for an ultrasound in a week before being convinced that it was indeed a miscarriage. If they suggest a d&c i would definitely reject that and wait a while longer before making decisions.

I just talked to my cousin and she is going to wait until her origional Dr appointment before she goes back. I am not the only one who has told her not to trust what the ER DR said so she said she is just going to take it easy (unless she starts to bleed heavier) until the 22nd which is her DR appointment and see what happens. I think that she and her baby will be okay. We have lots of people praying for her. I appreciate you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Definitely wait. Those HCG levels are great for 5 weeks and you cannot see a heartbeat until at least 6 weeks, sometimes later. When I went for my u/s the lady told me that the baby's heart didn't even start beating until 5 and a half weeks.

I am so glad she is holding off as she needs to be 100% certain before doing anything.

I pray her next scan brings good news!

I would go back for a second opinion, based on the fact that at 5 weeks along, doing an abdominal ultrasound wouldn't show her much at all, if anything! They would have to do a trans vaginal ultrasound to even get an idea of what was going on.

In fact, most ER ultrasound machines are antiquated and going to her OB will give her a much clearer answer. They have a lot more high tech machines than the ER would. The only reason I got my diagnosis of a miscarriage when I went to the ER was because the OB resident took me upstairs to use their fancy-pants machine.

Just remind her that it is super early and to try and relax. Most of the time people in the ER don't know what they are talking about when it comes to ultrasounds.

I agree that she is doing the right thing by waiting. That's all you see at 5 weeks is a gestational sac and sometimes a yolk sac. PLUS a regular u/s at 5 weeks will not see everything. She needs to have a vaginal u/s at 5 weeks along.I'm sure everything is okay. She is in my T&P's.

I agree with seeking a second opinion.

The heartbeat can't be seen this early, and they're completely ignorant for even telling her that they should see it!!!

My sister thought she was 6 1/2 weeks when she went for her u/s and they could only see a sac and no hb. she went back a week later at and there was a fetal pole and h/b, she was told that she was off by a week so at the first u/s she would have only been 5 1/2 weeks as per measurements. So definately, I would not listen to that ER dr. as he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. I hope the bleeding stops and your cousin has a great pregnancy!

I hope that baby was just too small for them to see! Your cousin and her baby are in my T&P.

my cousins spotting has stopped. She said she is having very mild cramping but that could be normal right? She is going to wait until the 22nd and go to her DR's appointment and I guess they will do an u/s then if she tells them she has been spotting. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Please continue to pray that her baby will be okay.
