I have decided to go ahead and try the one month of birth control that my perinatologist recommended. The goal is that one month will regulate my cycle a bit and help "reset" all those hormone signals. Now, the problem is that AF is missing. She is late considering when I got my LH surge (no, i'm not pregnant just have the usual PCOS irregular cycles...99% sure I have anovulatory cycles). Last cycle she didn't show for over 40 days...looks like I'm on pace for that this cycle. My question is, does it matter? Do I need to wait for her to show to start the pill? Obviously, I'm not concerned at all with pregnancy prevention....but will starting a month of birth control at any time still work? Would it still bring on AF at the end? The only other time I have started birth control was when I was actually using it for pregnancy prevention...I know the "rules" on those start dates but this is a bit different for me. Please help me "think" this one out.

Gosh Liz, you got me in a pickle Ive only ever done bc pills when trying to prevent and that was over 20yrs ago! I think a call to the dr. is the only way to figure this one out. Unless someone here was started for the same reason as you. Sorry Im no help, but curious to see the answer too....

Edit, ooooo wait a second, my sister did this too. she had to go on them for three months to regulate herself during ttc. She just started the day the dr. gave them to her, dont think it was during her period either...

I don't know if you talk to your sister much but if you do, will you ask her if she had tons of break-through bleeding or anything when she just started? Not that breakthrough bleeding is an issue, but then I bet I would have to do another month of the pill. I'm trying to get away with just doing 1 month.

Liz, I will definitely ask her in am. Its after 11pm here, so I know she is sleeping. As for break through bleeding, I dont remember that being an issue. She had to go on bc because her cycles were crazy like yours, sometimes 30-40 days. She was never regular. She had to be on them for 3 months because she had ovarian cycsts that were the size of grapefruits. Her eggs were being absorbed in the cycst every month for over 8 months before they realized she was ovulating but the egg could not get through making the cycst bigger. It did take the full three months for her cycst to disipate. But I do remember that as soon as she went off of them, she got pregnant the first month off.

I'm not sure either, but I think the doctor can prescribe a tablet to take to bring af on quicker, if you do need to wait til af comes to start the pill. Well, at least I'm sure one of the ladies on one of the other TTC boards I frequent has taken something to start af.

I was given meds to bring on AF after my D&C. You take them for 5 days and then you get your period.

I don't think it matter when you start the BCP. the only problem you may run into when you start it so late in your cycle is the break through bleeding. Now I have to tell you that before we were ttc (after I had Isabelle) I was on the pill and even though it was a 28 day pack I would skip the 7 sugar pills and start a new pack right away, just because I didn't want to see AF. There were times where I went through 3 packs before I had breakthrough bleeding, so that's about 8-9 weeks.

I think I would call the specialist and ask.. He is the one that wants you start it... should know when you should take it.... But I agree with the other ladies... that is a tough one!

I've heard of plenty of people getting pregnant coming off of the pill

Give it a try, it's only one cycle? Then why not?

I'm sorry that I don't have the answers or enough thoughts on this Liz... please KUP!!!

She did not have break through bleeding, but I wanted to clarify why she went on it in the middle of a cylce. She told me her dr. did not want her to ovulate any more, especially that month. Her cycst was so big and getting bigger due to the eggs bleeding inside of it when she did O. So, I know this is not your reason for going on them and wanted you to know exactly why she did. She did conceive though right away once she stopped taking them.
