Hi
I just got home from the D&c.. in lots of pain even though i took 2 advil plus 2 IVs of pain medication. how long does the pain last?
All i have for pain the following days is advil..

the doctor used ultrasound to guide him so i felt lots better. i have had only spotting so far..

so, im officially no longer pregnant.

thanks for all your support, may all go well with you wonderful ladies!!

i need your advise urgently
I am going tomorrow for my D & C. I didnt discuss properly with my doctir the options, i am reading about the D&C procedure now, i see its a blind procedure and there are lots of risks including ashermans syndrome and scarrinf leading to complete infertility..

i scar VERY easily..

i still have time to cancel..

is it safer and less risky to take the drug misoprosol to induce miscariiage?

please help!!!!
Thanks

I have to add that im not scared of seieng bleeding etc..im ok with this at the moment, dh is being very supportive.
my biggest fear with the d & C is the scarring as i scar soooo easily. and it will cause permanity infertility. As it is i got pregnant after several fertility treatments.
im also worried as i know procedures can be messed up no matter how good the physician is.
I had a lumbar puncture when i was younger and they did it wrong and ruined nerves in my spine..the pain was unbelievable.they even said i might not walk again..from such a simple procedure.
i still suffer pain to this day from that. i dont want to take the chance that ill never be able to carry a child.
Also, is the d&C done with an ultrasound or camera for guidance?
or do they really still do it blindly?

Im so sorry for your current situation. As for the d&c, yes it is done blindely, no ultrasound or camera for guidence. But with that said, I have had 5 over my lifetime and have four living children. I just recently had one in April for a loss at 9.5wks. My OBGYN, has been doing these for over 2 decades and has never had a patient that went infertile. I know there is a risk associated with any surgery, but it is minimal. If you take the drug instead to induce m/c, this doesn not mean you will not end up with an emergency d&c later on due to hemoraging or infection.

It is better for the dr. to perform a d&c under good circumstances, such as no infection or hemoraging at the time of procedure.

You will really need to discuss with your dr. what he and you are more comfortable with. Both ways carry their own risks and like I said, if the medication does not work then you are putting yourself at greater risk.

Is this a missed m/c? Is there a sac visable on u/s? If there is a sac visible and shows no deteriation at this point, then IMO I would opt for the d&c, only because I did hemorage with a 13wk gestation and ended up with an emergency d&c anyway because the sac was not deteriating fast enough and just kept hanging on through the natural m/c.

If there is no sac visible, then I would probably opt for the medication. Please discuss with your dr., especially if you still have time to cancel. Good luck and KUP.

Amzbaby... HUGS for what you have to go through... I had a d/c Feb 6th... Physicaly it was easy, I had no bleeding and pain... at that time. However the next 5 cycles as my body was getting back into shape... I was in pain and my cyles were pretty screwed up. I got pregnant again after 7 months... only to miscarry again... I decided NOT to have another D/C since I felt that is why I was pain, why my cycles were screwed up. I fought my doc.. as long as I didn't have a fever I wanted to m/c naturaly. It took my body over 4 weeks to fully m/c... I have had no pain, and my cycle I feel will return to normal sooner... THIS IS ONLY MY STORY.....

What you do has to right for YOU.. If you are questioning it.. cancell it and talk to you doctor before you reschedule... or decide to take the shot.. My doctor would not give me the shot it was D/C or natural...

Please feel free to PM me... KUP on what you decide.. we are here for any questions you may have... HUGS!!!

Lori & Kary have given you good info - I don't have really anything to add to that except to tell you that I chose to have a d&c in July and I don't regret it. It was mostly on the advice of 2 close friends who both tried to miscarry naturally only to end up waiting a month without miscarrying and having to have a d&c anyway for fear of infection. There is a minimal chance of scarring, that is true, but I am very happy that I had one. I went in under general anesthesia, had it done with no problems and my recovery was bleeding for a couple of days followed by some spotting similar to a normal period. I was physically back to normal in a couple of days and went back to work. I still had to deal with the emotional part (of course) but was very glad to get the physical part over with. Just do what feels right for you but know that a d&c is not that bad...at least for most women.

I'm sorry you're going through this! HUGS

I just wanted to share that i was incredibly fearful before my D&C and freaked myself out a bit googling it too much...it was the first surgery I'd ever had so being put under General A. also had me worried. That said, it was a very easy procedure and I recovered very quickly...the pain afterwards (for me at least) was so mild I didn't require any pain meds and bleeding was actually less than a regular period. I don't know anything about the drug you're thinking of using as an alternative, but scarring and complications are still quite rare with D&Cs...and even when you m/c naturally, you can still end up needing a D&C if not all clears naturally which a PP mentioned.

If you haven't been to the experiences sub-forum in the Pregnancy Loss group, I found those to be very helpful to me when I was trying to decide whether to do a D&C versus expectant mgmt.

I'll be thinking of you...KUP on what you decide and how you're doing. HUGS

Hi Amzbaby, I'm really very sorry to hear that you're in the process of loosing your baby

The decision sounds like a tough one and I think the ladies have given you allot of great advice!

I think out of everything, you need to do what is best for you... not the same decision is right for each of us. Your fears most definitely need to be discussed with your doctor BEFORE having anything done of course. I wouldn't hesitate to call them tomorrow and ask to speak with him, or book an appt to talk these thing more thouroughly.

Misoprosol is cytotec, it will make your uterus contract and hopefully start or finish the miscarriage process. It is very successful in doing that for allot of ladies, it's even helpful if a lady has retained tissue to help expel it. Ask if you can try that first before having the surgical procedure to see if that would work for you since your fear of scarring and infertility is so great.

My personal choice would be to try to do things as naturally and uninvasive as possible, BUT not every situation is the same. My very first loss was natural and over a course of a week or so was pretty much complete, then 9yrs later, this summer I had 2 losses... the first was natural and took several weeks. My second was caused by a doctor's mistake (long story), however, the new Dr's office gave me cytotec to help things along and it did just that. It took a couple doses, but it worked just fine. It helped things along and I finished passing everything.

Sorry I'm not much help, but it's definitely one of the toughest choices! I think it's best made with your doctor and yourself... I'm sorry that it's so hard!!!

my first loss was discovered at 8w3d, but the pregnancy probably terminated around 6 weeks. i was given a choice to do a d and c or wait. i opted for the surgery. i couldn't think of just waiting around wondering when i was going to bleed. i was extremely scared of the anesthesia (as i had never been under), but everything went smoothly.

i had another loss at the beginning of this month at 5w4d. i started spotting brown, then red. i called in and they explained what would happen. i miscarried on my own that day. i had painful (but not too bad) cramps for an hour, then passed a clot about an hour and a half later. i didn't bleed too badly. i think it was fairly "easy" because it was so early. like a previous poster mentioned, you could end up w/ a d and c anyway if you start bleeding too heavily.

i wish you luck and i'm so sorry for your loss...

I think it depends on how far along and whether it looks like you are passing things on your own. I have had 3 losses. My first loss was between my second and third child. I had a D&C with that one. For me, I was hemorrhaging really badly and there really wasn't time to sit and think about whether a d&c was the best choice. It was necessary. I recovered fairly quickly, but because I had hemorrhaged I felt awful afterwards, but I don't think it was because of the d&c. I went on to have 4 successful pregnancies after that before having my latest 2 losses. I think there are times when d&cs are beneficial and if you were further along and have not passed things I think the d&c may be something that becomes necessary. Talk to your doctor about the pros & cons of waiting, but I have had so many friends that I have known that have had losses and had to have a d&c and gone on to have children so try not to fret too much if you do wind up needing to have one.
