Okay, someone posted to me about my temps being on the low side and that could indicate thyroid problems. So of course, I consulted doctor google. Well, I will start with I have 2 children with type 1 diabetes. This is an autoimmune disorder as is hashimotos thyroiditis. I know that if you have one autoimmune disorder you are at risk for another as my boys are checked every year for thyroid problems and both of them on one occasion or the other has had their thryoid levels off. I think it is definitely possible that this could cause a higher risk for me for thyroid problems. Well anyways, after my google search I found this on just about every symptom list and it really, really struck a nerve with me.
It listed cold intolerance as a symptom. I have had cold urticaria which I of course self diagnosed a couple years ago. I have had it since I was a kid, but it got better, but has gotten way worse the last couple years. (I break out in hives in the cold and really bad hives sometimes too.) Anyhow, this has made me seriously think I want this checked. I know I am grabbing at straws here, but anyone with thyroid problems want to respond with their symptoms? I mean did you have really noticeable symptoms? How did you figure out that there was a problem?

Teresa - I have Hashimoto; diagnosed almost 3 years ago and Celiac. I am also getting antibody tests run for Type I diabetes because you are correct that Thyroid problems/Diabetes and Celiac occur in cluster and have a gentic link.
I was borderline for years but my antibodies soared to 31,000 when I was diagnosed. I had been gluten free for about 4 months and think that is part of what triggered.
My symptoms: Bloated/water retention - I get a "round" puffy look to me that is all water weight, cold intolerance - it makes my bones hurt, Hives, very tired/lethargic, coughing and food hangs up in my throat, sometimes a sore throat, general muscle aches and my hair falls out in gobs.
It is a simple blood test, but you should also have the thyroid examined for enlargement and nodules (I had biopsies done today on 2 of my 3 nodules). It is also important to note that most endocrinoligist recommend a TSH of 2 or lower for fertility and TTC. New TSH values were set in 2005 with the recommended TSH between .3 - 3.04 but a lot of labs still use the old values of .5-5.05
It is worth a try.
Feel free to PM if you need to talk more.
Kat.

Teresa, I know that InHisHands (jm member) is part of the thyroid board here. She also has thyroid issues.
My personal experience is this: My mother and sister both have under active thyroid. My mothers was so severe that her thyroid was removed completely, she received the radio active dye and came down with Graves Syndrome as a result. Had eye surgery due to the Graves syndrome. Her weight would fluctuate alot. she is only 5ft1inc and would fluctuate at least 20-30lbs at a time.
My sister was diagnosed 5yrs ago with her thyroid disease. I know her symptoms were always feeling tired (major), gaining weight without eating anything at all (20lbs in 3 months) hair fall out was huge. She lost about 1/3 of her hair (thank god she had so much, but you could see her scalp) and her neck/throat became very enlarged. she always had a larger neck than any one in the family (she has always been on the thin side). But one day at my kitchen table I was taken back by how big it looked. I asked her to go see her dr. immediately, and that is when she was diagnosed.
My sister also had 6 losses before she had her 3rd. baby. They tested her for every disorder, but THYROID. Eventually she did concieve her daughter, but only by sheer luck. This was the main and only reason that her current dr. could attribute to her losses over a 8yr. period. After treatment she concieved her son the second month trying with no problems and no progesterone supplements like she had with her daughter. Her dr. at time told her that was the only thing they could come up with, even though she had two healthy children with no supplements prior to her 6 losses.
I myself get my thyroid checked every year with the TSH test, since I was 18yrs. old. I had a few years of borderline results which were over-active thyroid. The dr.s back then did not want to treat me for thyroid because they new I would be dependent on the medication for the rest of my life. I was underweight by 40lbs for most of my teenage/early 20's. Im 5'6 and only weiged 100lbs. I finaly got to 105 lbs after giving birth to my thrid son at 28yrs. old. Now, I have had 4 kids and Im finally at a comfortable weight of 120lbs but Im almost 40!
So to sum it up, weight, fatique, coldness, hair loss and enlarged thyroid were the most common factors in my family, along with multiple m/c's by my sister all attributed to thyroid disease.
Make sure to mention to your dr. to get this checked, it is so easly corrected if caught in time.

my sister has an underactive thyroid. her TSH was 5.5 and she was put on meds right away. her dr. told her that is what caused her m/c and also that she won't be able to conceive until she gets that under control (under 2). it was a big surprise to her, since she didn't have any symptoms. She is really thin, and yeah sure she's tired, but she has a 2 year old who doesn't sleep at night. So she would never had guessed that she was having thyroid problems.
I hope you can get yours tested.

My mom has under active thyroid and it got worse with each pregnancy. She never tracked her cycles and my parents always were NTNP, so who knows if maybe she had a bunch of early m/c and never knew it. She had 8 kids though. She complained to her Dr and they always told her "Oh, it's just pregnancy". Well, finally after my sister (the youngest) she complained and they tested her. Low and behold, she had thyroid problems, and likely had for years, and nobody bothered! So I would definitely start nagging. It's such a simple test! Why not? GL!
