First THANK YOU ALL! For all the thoughts both here and on Facebook... My mom cried when she saw the support from my JM family on facebook...
This all started Friday when my mom called me at 1030pm saying my dad felt "a buldge" behind his scrotum.. and it was "uncomfortable". I told him I thought he should go to the ER.. Since he did have a hernia repaired on July 1st. (After he delt with it for 5 years, it was big and was a major scheduled surgery). Well I saw my dad on Sat when were stuffing stockings for our troops. He didn't look good, very uncomfortable and would stand up, sit down, stand up sit down. And looked like he was in pain. Went right home and went to sleep.
Sunday mom called and said he was running a fever and now was in PAIN. So he will now go to the ER. They brought him back, and tried to get him to drink Contrast for a CT scan. He couldn't keep it down.. They thought it could be an incarcerated hernia, or a bowel obstruction. After they pushed back his CT scan for hours.. trying to get him to hold down the contrast.. they finally took him for the Scan. At this point Work called me and said Yes I could have the night off... So I headed down to be with my mom and Dad. (My brother also left for the hospital at that time). I arrived at about 730pm. The surgen arrived about 15 min after me and my brother. My father looked like He-LL, He was so much pain, and his Belly was about 3x normal size. The surgen said "here is what we have. You have a hernia that has pushed your bowel down into the area behind your scrtoum, it looks like we might have more damage than just a hernia. If when I go in the bowel has been damaged I will have to remove the damage portion, and you will have a temporary Cholostomy bag. Untill the bowel can heal and we can go back and reverse it". Well at this point my mom started to cry and get very upset.. We calmed her down... and the surgen said we will be coming for you in about an hour... After this my father started to vomit again. So they put a NG tube down his nose into his stomach... this would also help with how big his belly was (since he was having a lot of Gas pains also) At about midnight they came for dad.. we waited until about 3am when the Dr came out and said "I was able to reduce the hernia, at this point it "looks" like the bowel is ok... we will have to wait and see if the bloodflow returns to normal".. (Now as a nurse I know that if the blood flow does not return to normal.. the tisue will die. And hence it will have to removed, equals- cholostomy) So we got to see my dad at 430 when they brought him back to his room. He looked better color wise, stomach a little smaller. I got home at about 630 after an hour drive home. I slept since I had to work tonight... I did call in for another Low work day so I could go back and see him. I called in at 230.. and they said it didn't look good for me getting a second night off. So I showered and called my mom.. Dad is now not peeing. They want to put a folley in him... and he dosen't want it. (WELL GOOD LORD WHO WOULD!) But if he is not peeing... he NEEDS it. At about 5pm work calls and said I could have the first 4 hours off... so I get DH to drive me down.. We get thier at about 630pm.. Dad pee'd a little. But he feels like he is running a fever to me (Holding his hand it felt like I was hold a hot cup of tea). His Blood pressure is up 150/80 , heart rate is up 106, just not looking good (to the nurse in me) I talk to his nurse... (I didn't like her and I don't like the hospital he is in, I wish he was in mine) She took his temp and yes he is running a fever 100.9. She leaves.. and, not to return.. a new nurse comes in... (I like her alot better).. I make sure she knows I am a nurse.. And I start going throught everything the pain, the fever, the b/p, the peeing so she was going to get my dad up to see if he could pee. .... SO I feel she will take good care of my dad tonight.. She listened to his belly and the ONLY GOOD thing is he has Bowel sounds..(Even asked me if I wanted to listen!) meaning that the Peristalsis (this is what makes the food/fecal matter move through the intestines) has started to work... Hopefully he will start peeing on his own.. and start to pass gas.. the beging signs that peristalsis is going strong... And hopefully no need for more surgeries!
So please continue to keep my dad in your prayers.. Sorry this was so long.. It has been a long 36 hours....
HUGS XOXOXO to you all... You are really the greatest group of ladies!

Oh big hugs Kary. It sounds like an awful ordeal, but it also sounds like he's starting to come around. I'm keeping you all in my thoughts that he is able to recover fully and that the surgeries are over!!!

I will continue to say prayers for your dad, Kary!!! I'm glad things are looking up and everything looks like it's starting to work! I go back and forth whether it is a good thing to be a nurse when you have a family member in the hospital- sometimes good, other times, not because you can get so frustrated when you think they're not doing what they should!
