I'm not sure what you're "supposed" to do, but I started taking my folic acid a few days after I m/c and then I started taking my folic acid again a few days before I ovulated. Idk if it'll help, but I didn't do it last time and had a m/c, so. GL!

You can get pre-natals OTC and most are comparable to the prescription time. I got mine at CVS. There is 100 pills per bottle and at the time it was buy one get one free!! I love those deals. I think they were $10 per bottle, so it was well worth it to me. I always take an extra folic acid pill, but it's not required. I take mine every day. I try to never skip a day. If you do a google search on pre-natal vitamins you can find some that are inexpensive and around your price range. IMO, it's better to take them everyday so you constantly have the vitamins in your system. But if cost is an issue, then IMO, I would start taking them about 4-5 days before you O till about 3 days after and of course, everyday starting when you get your BFP.
Good Luck!!!

I second (third?) the cheapie OTC prenatals. That's what I've been taking for the folic acid and other vitamins.

my ob told me to keep taking them. she said after a m/c it is especially important to build back up what the baby took out.
plus folic acid isnt stored - you need to take it daily to be sure you have enough in your system at any one time.
believe you me - the vitamins will be the CHEAPEST part about having a baby

You want to take folic acid... any women in child bearing age should be on Folic Acid.... incase they get preggers. As for the Pre-nats... I also take the cheapy ones until I get my BFP.. then my Dr puts me on the prescription ones.. higher Folic acid and B's...

I got a store brand bottle at a grocery store here and it was about $10 for a bottle of 240 so I take them every day.

My ob said to take prenatal's 3 months before even trying to conceive and then continue to take them through breastfeeding, that can be a very long time considering some people like myself try for years. I just take the OTC Target brand which is 90 pills for like five bucks, then after I conceive I get the prescription ones. From what I understand the prenatal is something you need your system to build up, that is why you should not discontinue taking them.

For the folic acid to able to prevent neural tube defects you need to be taking your pre-natals for at least 6 weeks prior to conception. I stocked up when my drugstore had their own brand on sale.
