Over the 18 months of loss, after loss, after another loss... I have looked into this. And the information is contradicting... What do you think?

Progesterone - Using Progesterone to Prevent Recurrent Miscarriage

Is Miscarriage caused by low progesterone? Or is low progesterone caused by a pregnancy that is not viable?

I have done a lot of research on this one and I can say that I am very familiar with the debates, but there just is not enough studies done to date to give an opinion one way or the other. All I know is that after 3 miscarriages I a willing to try it to see if it helps. I would be sad if I didn't go on it and then had a fourth miscarraige. I would always wonder if it would have helped....????

I would be hesitant to take it unless I had been diagnosed with low levels. Having said that, I will be taking it after my embryos are transferred back.

I thought about that after I had my second miscarriage, and didn't know what would cause it so I never did look into it further..

My doc said that the next time I get a BFP she is going to put me on it. She said that it's very controversial but it can't hurt. Some docs do it and some docs don't. So, that's the next step.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I never had issues with progesterone, at least not that I was ever told. And I don't believe that my miscarriages were due to low progesterone levels, however the RE put me on progesterone anyway as soon as I O'd until 12 weeks pg. So who is to say whether it helped or not. It didn't hurt. But I wouldn't recommend just anyone taking it, as it does thicken your blood and there is a greater risk for blood clots. That is why I'm on baby aspirin as well. I do know someone who had really low progesteron in the early weeks of pregnancy and she was bleeding. Once she got put on supplements her pregnancy contiued beautifully.

Im going to jump in here too, if you dont mind. I never had progesterone issues either with any of my pregnancies,(the 4 living children I have) but since I was seeing a RE while I conceived this time, I was put on it as standard protocal. Baby asprinin as well until 12wks. In my deepests of hearts, I know that low progesterone was not the cause of my m/c's (three in one year) but rather that the pregnancy was not viable causing my progesterone to be low. I will never know if this pregnancy needed the progesterone or not, neither will my doctors. As my obgyn says, its like which came first the chicken or the egg? Same apply's for progesterone, there is not enough studies to show wheather it helps or not. I DO however beleive for women who have never carried baby without the progesterone supplement, these women are the ones that trully have a progesterone deficiency. The only way to know for sure is to do monitoring of your progesterone through a normal non-pregnant cycle, and even then, its just a good guess. I had three cycles monitored prior to, and all three cycles showed good levels of progesterone. Higher non-pregnant than while pregnant ( the three losses), telling me at least, this was just a case of bad luck.

Like Trish said though, just because it cant hurt, does not mean that taking progesterone supplements does not come without its own risks.

My second pregnancy/loss even with progesterone supplement my level of progesterone never got higher than 15 so that makes me believe that level will be low for a nonviable pregnancy. I will still take progesterone next time I get pregnant.

I just got prescribed progesterone today after my second loss in a row.

I'm not supposed to take it until I test positive though.
