so now I have a 5-day prescription for my UTI. The drug is called Bactrim. As I've continued to read on the internet, various sites say a) don't take it while pregnant or b) it's not clear whether or not it should be taken in pregnancy. Only one site says it should be okay to take as long as you're getting enough folic acid.

I called my doc to double check. I never did see her when I went, the nurse brought out the prescription. I was afraid to call and check, but I said I'd rather be on the safe side and appear high strung than not to double check. Her response to me was that I wouldn't be pregnant over the next 5 days (the days I'll be taking the antibiotic). I ovulated yesterday and we are actively ttc, so couldn't I be pregnant? Or is there some kind of rule that pregnancy doesn't happen within 5 dpo????????? She made me feel stupid.

I know y'all know where I'm coming from. We are a group of women that have experienced loss and we don't want to do anything, *ANYTHING* at all that could possibly contribute to more loss.

TTCAL is hard enough. Every little possible thing to worry about is magnified. This is not fun.

just venting I guess

I emailed my friend in NC for her opinion (she's a physician). still awaiting her response

I had a UTI in February right after O and I also took Bactrim. I figured that I'd be safe until implantation (7-10 dpo). I don't know if I was right or not, but I couldn't take the UTI any longer. I wouldn't worry too much!

5 yrs ago I had IV Sedation to have 3 teeth removed. Mind you we were not trying so I didnt think of it when the Dr had asked if there was a change I was pg. I said no. Well 4 days after having my teeth pulled I was with a few friends and my 1 friend and I always started the same day. I was indeed 2 days late and didnt think of it since I was still taking T3s. I did get a BFP so I was scared about having the IV Sedation. My OB said the baby should be fine since the first few weeks mom isnt passing anything to the baby yet. If that makes sense.

Evan is a healthy happy 4 yr old boy.

Okay ladies, thanks to your responses I'm feeling a bit better. I have never been so panicky and anxious and emotional in my life since having pregnancy losses.

I know how you feel, but really what you take before implantation doesnt matter. Your baby isnt really getting its main source of nutiriton from you yet. I mean dont smoke pot or drink a thousand gallons of liquor. But taking the UTI medication isnt bad for you, espically because a UTI can cause complications in prenancy.

Looks like you got good advice. I agree...it's so stressful..every little thing you second guess before you drink it or eat it.

Hugs.

Honey.... No you're NOT stupid... but to answer your question, implantation does not take place until 7+DPO so you're safe. Also, I've been on that stuff in early pregnancy and the doc knew I was pregnant. Benefits sometimes outweigh the risks and having an infection can cause miscarriage (BUT I think it has to be a stronger/baaaad infection KWIM?) Soooo honey you're A-ok, no worries ok?

It's good to be aware and cross-check things tho you're in motherly mode!

P.S.~ I'm on several Catagory C medications all of which have been cleared by several of my doctors (high-risk ob, peri, GP, reg OB/gyn) . Generally antibiotics are safe during pregnancy except for the super strong ones, I think like Cipro, anti-malarial... and I doubt you'll be on those

When I was doing my OBGYN rotation we actually prescribed anitbiotics to pregnant mothers for UTIs. The reason some of these drugs are class C is because the pharm companies did not want to pay the $$$ required for testing the meds on pregnant women. But in the meantime it is prescribed and nothing bad happened to the babies, so the drug remains a class C even though the "life lab" has proven it to be harmless.

Like Celena stated, only the heavy duty antibiotics are worisome and you're in the safe zone.
