I had a molar pregnancy and if you research a mp it talks about higher bhcg. I have been looking back through some of my records and went in at 5w3d and my bhcg was 24543.27 Shouldn't that have been a red flag right there? Went back in at 6w4d and my bhcg was 61399.79 I am kind of beyond frustrated right now at this b/c my dr. had mentioned when I get pg again they will monitor my hcg a lot more. If that didn't send a red flag to him then I don't know what the heck would. The second number isn't really that far off but still.

What do you ladies think? I just feel like they should have been able to tell a lot sooner than what they did. Well actually they didn't know til I m/c so they never really knew.

Lisa they could have thought that is might be a multiple pregnancy.. Since my HCG at about 22 dpo was over 10,155. That was about 4wks 6d..... And that was my last HCG level... so I would assume at over 5 weeks my HCG would have been over 20,000. Not that this is an excuse.. It could be what they were thinking... HUGS

Lisa, I know you are very upset (rightly so) and I dont want to stir the pot but I do have to agree with you. Why do they bother with the hcg if they aren't going to investigate anything that seems unusual? Couple that with the fact that you had severe morning sickness, which is another symptom.
On the other hand if the second hcg wasn't that far off, they may have thought everything was still ok.
If it was me I would simply ask my Dr what his thinking was. After the first hcg draw, did he mention anything about the numbers being higher than expected?
I think that he may have suspected something with the first hcg then after the 2nd draw he didnt see the huge rise he would expect in a molar pregnancy.
Right or wrong he should have been upfront and expressed any concerns he had with you, so at least you would have been a little prepared.
Im sorry hun, I wish you only the best.

High hcg could also mean a multiple pregnancy. Did they do an u/s to check and see if you may have been carrying twins??? Maybe that's what the dr. thought and didn't even consider molar. HUGS!

Kary, I was about 24dpo I believe. My second number was still higher but they didn't check any more after that so no telling what it was.

Here is a chart that I was looking at online and also the chart the hospital uses.
# 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
# 4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
# 5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
# 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
# 7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml

Their lab just lists
1-10 weeks (post LMP) 5- >225,000
11-15 weeks (post LMP) 16,995 - >225,000

Exactly, what is the point in checking it seems like. They knew I had spotting at 6 wks, severe morning sickness, and then severe pre-eclampsia. When my feet started to swell and I went in with higher bp than normal that should have been another red flag. I thought I liked his office b/c they did do an u/s when I had the spotting and all the others to make sure everything was ok. They also got me in really quick when stuff happened and I needed to be seen. I just feel like they knew and didn't say. I even happened to come across a poss. of a molar pg. after researching severe ms. They should have been familiar with it. I think I am going to ask the oncologist when I go back on the 21st. I am going to take my u/s pics too and see what they think.

Lisa,

From everything you have posted, it sounds to me like your Dr.'s office just wasn't equipped to deal with a MP. Your doctor had probably never dealt with one before and didn't realize there was such different protocal. It goes all the way back after your pregnancy, he didn't want to follow your levels down and told you it was OK to start ttc after your first AF. He handled it like a normal pregnancy.

I have had several doctors in my life that were not equipped to deal with my situation of Celiac. One in particular was a GP. He ran the tests that he could and knew I had an autoimmune disease, but couldn't figure out which one. He referred me to several different specialist to diagnose me, but the one that could missed it. I left that doctor, but I often wished I had written him a letter after I was diagnosed so he would be able to help the next person.

If you talk to him about it and he truly is a good doctor, chances are he will not make the mistake again.

Kat.
