I take prenatal vitamins that have 800 mcg of folic acid, but I also have some alone that is 400 mcg. Would you take both or can you take too much folic acid?

I'd take both...I take my prenatal which also has 800mcg and an extra folic acid which has 400 mg...My doctor told me it was fine.

Honestly the only time you should take more folic acid is when your doctor tells you to, I wouldn't "self medicate." Taking an extra 400mcg's isn't going to hurt you, but if you don't need it I wouldn't take it.

My RE sent me to my maternal fetal med doc who told me to take 2-2.4mg or 2,000-2,400mcg's because I am on medications that are catagory C, but she feels that they are *ok* for ttc and pregnancy however she told me to take additional folic acid because of the risks of abnormalities or defects.

Also with having an autoimmune disease, allot of times we have very low folic acid levels and need extra whether ttc, pg or not.

Hi, my prenatals have 1000mcg, so I would imagine that an extra 200 would be totally safe. I mean Id get the extra 200 in eating 8 spears of Asparagus, 1/2 cup of ceasar salad and a cup of pasta!!

The cool thing about folic acid is that you could drink a gallon a day and it would not be harmful to a forming embryo or fetus. The body uses what it needs and will dump the rest in your urine, it's literally impossible to overdose on it. Great stuff, eh?

Thanks for the help everyone. My doctor told me to take a prenatal, but she didn't say what kind and they all vary some in the amounts of folic acid and other vitamins that they offer.

Ditto BigGrin. It's a water soluble vitamin so anything your body doesn't use will be disposed of in your urine, you can't overdose.

I was taking 3,000mcg during my pregnancy.

I am on 4000mcg of 4mg.... like the other ladies... this is one supplement that you can take and your body will only take what is needed. My concern was with my MTHFR and Twins... do I need more?? since my body will only use what is needed so during the begining weeks I did take 5mg. Now since the spinal cord should be formed i just droped down to 4mg.
