Hi all - my name is Sara and I just had my first miscarriage (It was early - I was 5 weeks). I feel terrible for all of you who endure this time and time again. I am just wondering for my future reference (since I know nothing about this) how long you waited to start ttc again.

My pregnancy was farther along with a D&C and my doctor told me it was fine to TTC 6 weeks later...He said that for years woman were told to wait 6 months but new studies show that it doesn't matter and they don't have to wait...He also thinks you won't get pregnant if you aren't ready and emotionally it doesn't help to wait...I think after 1 or 2 periods probably depending on when you had your loss...I started TTC right away after I had a 2nd trimester stillbirth...I'm now 7 weeks post miscarriage and haven't really started yet.

Hello and Welcome.

My dr told me that I didn't need to wait at all. The only reason that they have you wait is so they can date the pregnancy, if you body isn't ready to get pregnant it won't. Good luck and i hope your journey is a short one.

I waited until my first cycle after a D&E at 15 weeks. It took me a little over 30 days to get my first AF and we began trying that cycle. My Dr. said I should wait until my 2nd cycle if my 1st AF was unusually clotty or heavy since that could mean my lining could be to thin to support a pregnancy.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
My doctor told me to wait 1 cycle before ttc, but I think that's just for dating purposes.

Hi Sara,

To answer your question most doc's suggest waiting 3 months... or if anything, wait at least 1 full cycle then AF so you have a reference point for a future EDD as well as giving your body time to heal itself by sloffing off the uterine lining an rebuilding.

I think every doctor has different guidelines tho, allot of times they suggest to wait the 3 months not only for physical health but mental/ emotional health.

Thank you all so much for your responses. It's interesting how there are different suggestions from different doctors. I really appreciate all of your input. This is all so new to me. It was so easy when we conceived our son, I could never have anticipated this. Thank you all!

I am so sorry for your loss... But remember these are suggestions. If you are healthy and have had no complications thier is no medical reasons to wait. Like the other ladies have said. If you wait for your first AF you will have a start to date the pregnancy... if you get your BFP prior to AF showing.. they will just have to use U/S to date the pregnancy.

Good Luck!

Both the OB/GYN who did my D&C and my own OB/GYN told me the same exact thing: two months. But mine was done late in the first trimester (arguably in the second). So there was more healing required. Besides, the miscarriage hurt so badly that we had absolutely no interest in trying those two months. But if you're ready and your doc says you're ready, then give it a bash. You were 5 weeks, so I'd argue that you could try the next cycle. GL!

Thanks for the recent responses! I have been feeling much better the last few days. With my loss I had virtually no cramping (I guess because it was so early) so it was pretty much pain free, just moderately heavy bleeding for like 2-3 days. So...I feel fine physically. It wasn't a strain on my body. It's so hard to decide if I should start right away because I feel like I will be terrified that it will happen again...but I guess I will be that way no matter when I start.

I had really strong cramping but hardly any bleeding, which surprised me a lot! I bled for maybe three days total. I had some brown spotting on the fourth day but it wasn't anything a pantyliner couldn't handle. He gave me some Percocet for the cramping, which helped a lot, and it made naps pretty easy. At least physically, I felt back to "normal" after four days. I was told no sex for 10 days after the procedure, but believe me, it was WAY longer than that in reality.

I am sorry to hear about your loss... Mostly it depends on your body.. With my first m/c which I lost at 5 wks 6 days I waited one cycle and then went back at it.. I got pregnant right away, and started miscarrying the second time at exactly 5wks 6 days again.. Except that my body didn't cleanse itself and that one drug on until my Dr swore I was still pregnant and low and behold I was and still producing the hormone.. Sad to say I started bleeding again, and since the DR who examined me in the ER thought it was a possible eptopic I had a round of methotrexate help my body to cleanse and I was told to wait atleast 3 cycles.. Good luck hun..

The doc yesterday told me to wait one cycle just to give my lining time to thicken back up.
