This is our first Halloween in our new house. Tonight is Trick or Treat night (which in itself is totally weird to me- we ALWAYS had it on Halloween). I bought a bunch of candy to give out, opened my front door, and turned on my light, and all the kids are passing right by the house. All the neighbors who are giving out candy are sitting outside with their bowls.... that is SO not how I am used to doing it.

I should really go outside, but I just can't bring myself to go sit out in the cold all alone, watching all the cute little ones in costumes, and thinking about how I should have had a 6 month old of my own to dress up as a pumpkin or a lion or a flower. It's one thing if I can give out my candy from the privacy of my house and have some time to recover between kids, but I'm not sitting out there on display. The way they do Halloween here is just so weird to me

That really is weird. Wow. I get doing it on Saturday instead of Sunday, but THURSDAY? On a school night? That makes no sense. I don't blame you for not wanting to sit outside.

Thanks, Brittanie. After DH got home we went and sat out together for a while, and I didn't feel so vulnerable But I still don't get why the kids don't have to say trick or treat! They're trick or treating!

Is this some sort of neighborhood/homeowner's association thing? And why not say it? I'd make them say it anyway.

what? Im totally confused. People trick or treat, or dont say trick or treat, on a night thats not halloween and get candy? Where do I sign up? I could go house to house then have candy to give out on Sundays Halloween, and keep the good stuff for us!! Thats one heck of a plan! hehe really though, whats the thinking behind a Thursday night?

We actually live in a tiny town (a farm town, there is a cornfield at the end of our street )about 45 minutes outside a big city. I think there were way more kids on my street tonight than even live in our whole town My DH said there were cars parked the whole length of the main road in town.

All of the towns/suburbs/neighborhoods around here have trick or treat scheduled for different days and times. Like if you wanted to you, today you could go to one town from 5-6, another from 6-7, and another from 7-8. I saw the schedule for the area, and there was anywhere from Thursday to Sunday. So weird.

ETA: Somebody said they thought they chose a school night to prevent the older kids from starting trouble like they would on a weekend

On the topic of Halloween weirdness... I remember last Halloween we were at a new friend's apt, we had all recently moved to Mississippi and weren't sure about the scene here. Some kids from the apartment complex were coming by trick or treating... But then the door rang, and there was this HUGE woman there holding a tiny infant baby, almost newborn, and it just had some funny hat on, no real costume, she had no costume at all whatsoever. She clearly wanted candy, so my friend offered the bowl, and she took 2 HUGE handfuls, said something in a thick MS/Cajun accent we could not understand, and then she was gone. We were like, "what was that?!?!??!!". It was hilarious and we still joke about it.

Oh yeah... She didn't say "trick or treat" either!!! Unless that's what she was trying to mumble to us. We had not been around long enough to understand all of the locals when they talk.

So your town is weird, Nicole, but so is mine.

wow, that's so strange!!! they try something kind of like that around here, sit outside on the main busy roads in chairs with bowls, but I don't think anyone does it...We don't any way...We just go house to house, and no way am I sitting outside in the cold and rain (we are supposed to have a windy rainy halloween this year ugh)....It's also strange that they aren't doing it on halloween...I've been hearing of that a lot lately...Our town always does it on halloween.

I would refuse to sit outside. It's freezing here.
We are trunk-or-treating before trick-or-treating but it's on Saturday.

I still remember going out with my kids when it was freezing cold. We always only went to the doors that had lights on. We stopped at one house where the light was on, the lady gushed about how cute the kids were, then handed me a flier and said she didn't believe in Halloween. ***! Then turn your darn light off! I don't think my 5yr old read her flier. If I were a teenager, I would have egged her house.

Shen! That's kind of creepy.

Rebecca, I agree, you always go trick or treat at the houses with their lights on! I bet her house did get egged! It's pretty cold here, too. We only sat out for half an hour, it was all I could take

That's kind of crazy to do it on a Thursday. And I agree with not wanting to sit out on your porch. Though I can see that happening in a smaller town, so I guess maybe it makes sense, except the whole Thursday thing.

LOL Rebecca. We are also celebrating on Saturday--taking Kiki to the mall to do some trick or treating and festivities, and then she goes to her dads for the nighttime Halloween trick or treating (I had her last year. We switch off yearly) And i'm going to a Halloween party.
