I just got more blood work results back today about miscarriage. My Doctor mentioned that I am a carrier of MTHFR which greatly effects pregnancies and often results in losses. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any experience with this? I have never heard of it and although I have the internet, like everyone else - real life stories help most....

I just found out not long ago that I too have it!

I don't know much about it, so i'm not much help...I am taking baby aspirin for it, and extra folic acid...I also heard that you should take extra B6 and B12 while pregnant, but i'm going to ask my doctor about it first.

I haven't seen the specialist yet... Did your doctor say that you could have a normal pregnancy with some medication?

I don't have MTHFR, but I have a friend IRL who was just diagnosed with it and her doctor said she can have a normal pg with baby aspirin and extra folic acid.

I do have a different clotting disorder (factor II mutation), and even with that, I should be able to have a normal pregnancy with a blood thinner (heparin).

It can be scary to get results like this, but there are treatmtents!

I have MTHFR too. It is a genetic defect that causes your body to not process folic acid properly. Some people consider it a clotting disorder and some will tell you its not. Many will say that depends on whether your homocsteine level becomes elevated. Elevated homoysteine is sometimes caused by MTHFR, most often with homozygous C677T forms of the defect. The elevated homocystiene is what causes blood clots, which can cause miscarriages and other problems for mom and the baby.
I am heterozygous C677T. It makes a difference which form of it you have. Do you know whether you are heterozygous, homozygous(2 copies of 1 defect), compound hetero, or compoud homo ? Any form can cause problems, but having 2copies, especially of C677T is generally more serious. I am on two folgard tablets daily, along with my prenatal. My doctor has not put me on any blood thinners. I have had 3 miscarriages and he believes it is the MTHFR.
Please read the following link about MTHFR
MTHFR Deficiency
That page has a lot of information.
MTHFR can often be easily fixed by taking folic acid and usually some type of blood thinner, usually either aspirin or lovenox, but not always. I would find out what form of the defect you have and what your homocysteine level is. Although your homocysteine level can vary each time you test. There are other women on here with MTHFR who probably know more than me,but that is my basic understanding.Iwish you the best! feel free to talk to me anytime

I am homozygous A1298C (meaning I have two copies I got one from my mom, and one from my dad)... This also means I have passed along one copy to my girls. After my third M/C I had blood work, and it showed this. I went to a Hematologist (a blood Dr) because my primary Dr suggested it (since he was not 100% sure of the MTHFR mutation) With this mutation it is a very Grey area. And you will find alot of reports on the internet saying if your homocystiene level is normal YOU have no elevated chance of blood clots.. (but they are unsure if it affects invitro) Thier is 5 levels..
1. C677T & C677T (Two C Copies - C677T Homozygous)
2. C677T & A1298C (One Copy of Each The C & A - Compound Heterozygous)
3. C677T (One C Copy - C677T Heterozygous)
4. A1298C & A1298C (Two A Copies - A1298C Homozygous)
5. A1298C (One A Copy - A1298C Heterozygous)

When I spoke to my OB he felt a baby aspirin would be enough. When I spoke to the hematologist he felt that what ever my OB decided he would be ok.. so if he wanted Lovenox he would follow me and prescribe. So he sent the report to my OB.

My OB wanted me to take to a Prenantal (that had higher B12 and B6) I was also on a baby aspirin daily and extra folic acid a total of 4mg.

*** Now as for the whole MTHFR not being a cause for M/C I had three (one we know was from a chromosomal, but the other two... ) I was able to carry Twins being on the above!! We had our rainbow babies in Sept 2010!! ***

Just popping in as I read here still...

I am hetero C. However, I also have antiphospholipid syndrome so I am on Lovenox during pregnancy.

Like the others have stated, you need to find out if you're hetero, compound hetero or homo. If compound hetero or homo you'll likely need treatment with an injectable blood thinner such as Lovenox or Heparin. If you're hetero then aspirin should do the trick although if you still experience loss it's not out of the realm of reason to request/demand trying a stronger blood thinner.

You'll also want to take an increased dosage of folic acid starting when ttc. You'll have to see what your doc recommends I've heard from an extra 1,000 mcg up to 5,000 mcg.
