Just got DH's W2's in the mail today, and am seriously irked!

Last year, he only worked for six months out of the year, and he got back double (DOUBLE!!!) what we are getting this year.

That's the only thing that changed, was that he worked the full year.

I don't need any W2's since I am a SAHM, (Her dad is claiming her) so I'm totally just hoping that there is some credit we get, or something that tax calculators don't take into account.

We go into Jackson Hewitt on Monday, so hopefully it's better news than just his W2. I'm just hoping it doesn't cost a TON of money to get em done.

Though I don't know much about taxes. I always got them done somewhere, and since I don't have cable i'm not up to date on everything current--but still.

Anyone else with me?

I think usually the less you make, the more you get back? I don't know a lot about it...We have a lady at H&R block that's done our taxes for years (We just got a letter saying she's no longer working there though ugh)...I'm still waiting on DH's w2 forms, and it's really frustrating me!!! We need to file right away to pay off medical bills...Hopefully they'll come in the next week!!!...We didn't even file till April last year, so i have no clue when they came.

With a full year of income it likely put you in a higher tax bracket. I'm not looking forward to taxes this year either because my contracting job I pay my own taxes so we really have no idea what to expect this year. We think we'll break even because we took extra out of DH's checks but we'll see!

Yeah, I don't e-file because i'm always scared to screw stuff up, so i'd rather pay the extra and get it done in office, just so i'm sure it's done right and we are getting the maximum amount back.

I think i'm going with H&R block this year too. (My stepmom filed for us last year. We waited til April LOL) I'll just be happy with getting anything back.

Still frustrates me though.

I also go to H&R Block to get ours done. I think it does work the less you make the more you get back but not totally sure. Hoping you get some good news

Unless you know how to file taxes with a 1099 I suggest you hire someone to do them. I was a 1099 contractor for the previous 10 years. Interview a few tax people and see how you feel about them, don't feel like you have to take the first tax preparer you see.

We are getting less back this year then we did last year but not by too much ... We earned a little more this year, We filed using turbo tax and ( fingers crossed) the IRS says on the where's my refund thing that we should have our deposit on or by the 1st of Febuary . Although on their cycle chart it says by the 28th of Jan...

I always thought the less you make the more you get back too. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope you get something back! We used to go to Jackson Hewitt, but stopped after having major problems with one of their preparers. We've been using Turbo Tax since then, and it has worked out well (and is a lot cheaper than JH). The only tax documents we have so far is my W2. We're still waiting for the rest.

I do know that the tax laws changed this year. Myself and several others didn't even have taxes taken out to begin with until we told them to and most people didn't have as much taken out as last year. My HR department didn't explain it very well, just that things changed. I think the whole idea was they (government) were hoping it would stimulate our economy to have less federal taken out throughout the year so we'd spend more. Personally I would prefer a bigger refund at the end of the year.

Finally got a little bit of clarity. Thank goodness. The W2 we got, was only for the old company. Me being me, didn't consider that there would be two W2's from when the company switched ownerships halfway through last year. So we still have to get the W2 from the current company.

*sigh* It may not be much more, but it makes a lot more sense now. The only thing that sucks is that now we have to wait to get the W2 from them, and wait to file.

i worked part time last year and we got around seven grand. but this year i worked full time, that took us from getting around seven grand to not even three. the messed up part is i have a girl friend that made 10,000 more this year than me and my hubby combined and she is getting back almost five. it just doesnt seem right.

Amy, I'm glad you were able to get some answers, but I'm sorry you have to wait even longer. I hope it all works out and you get a nice refund.

Is your friend single? The reason I ask is I've heard tax law "penalizes" couples for being married. I remember when DH and I got married a few of our relatives were joking with us and said that we should have just stayed together without getting married, because by doing so we just cut our tax refund. It sucks!

nope she is married and has the same amount of children in her home as i do. the only thing that i can think of that is different is that her hubby is a SAHD.

If you make less than the income limit (I think it's 18,700) you don't have any taxable income, so you get all your taxes back. Also the more money you make the more taxes you pay.....

It also depends on how many dependents you "claim" If you have a husband and four kids and claim zero, they take out more tax per check, and you get more back in the end. If you claim 6 in the same situation, they take out less taxes with each paycheck, but you also get less if any in the end....

You end up paying the same amount either way... I personally would rather have the money throughout the year than in one chunk at the end. It is nice to get a huge chunk of money at tax time, but I would rather be the one to invest and profit off my income than letting the government profit of my income...

I've been doing my taxes since I was 15, a good 19 years now... start using Tax Act and haven't looked back. Even my dad (who is the one who turned me on to using them) and I always end up getting more back then if I did it myself. It figures it all out for me... however with DH being self employed, last year he didn't work enough to file what little he was self employed there was only a $16.00 difference with or without it. This year he's been self contracted and we're going to have to file even tho the last 7+ months he hasn't made much.... I'm filing mine first alone then going to do an amended for his since their paperwork hasn't come yet. We need the money too much now and we'll set up payment if any when we do his.

As far as what you get back, there's a cap of an amount depending on how you file that gets you the most back then it just declines the more you make after that cap. Think of it like a hill, depending on how much or how little you get back.

It all depends on how much she is having taken out of her paychecks so you can't really go off of that. If she withholds more from her checks then obviously she would get back more.
