Just found out my cat is in renal failure and am completely devistated. I feel like I caught it too late and there is not a good prognosis because of it. Of course I know that cats mask diseases very well and it had a quick onset but I still feel guilty. Please help me out by posting your favorite pictures of your furry friends. And if you could keep my kitty in your thoughts, i'd appreciate it. Thanks...

I'm so sorry!!! I just lost my baby kitty to renal failure in October. I also felt like I missed something, but I took him in as soon as I saw him acting funny. It's a sucky disease. I was trying all the treatments up until his poor little heart went out.
Did they say if any of the treatments might work?

Hugs!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about Cammie! That's so sad I haven't lost a pet as an adult yet, and I dread the day when one of our dogs has to go I can only imagine how you must feel right now.

I don't have any kitties, but here are a couple pics of my boys!

This one is Pogo, our Husky/Boxer mix. He crawled up on top of the couch cushions and slipped down into this position. He actually fell asleep like that for a couple of hours!

And this is DH taking a nap with Baxter, our chiweenie/min pin mix.

I don't have my pics on this computer, but I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. We lost our dog last year to cancer, so I know what you are going through. We went through 4 1/2 months of chemo with him before he died, and it was just heartbreaking. Like your kitty, he tried to hide how much pain he was in from us.

Thank you so much, everyone. I appreciate your stories about your animals. I don't feel quite so alone. All your animals are adorable and made me smile.

@SamF - They did bloodwork on her yesterday and saw her kidney enzymes were very high and her white blood cell count was also elevated. They are keeping her overnight tonight with IV fluids to try to flush some of the toxins out of her system and antibiotics for the possible infection causing her white cell elevation. Tomorrow they will run another blood panel to see if there is any change in kidney values or if the damage is too severe. However her levels were very bad today and i don't have a lot of hope they will change significantly. If, by chance, they do get better, sounds like they'll have me do sub-q fluids and diet change. What treatments did your kitty go thru?

Your kitty is definitely in my prayers! I love, love, love, love cats SO much (was planning on becoming a crazy cat lady until I met DH, and he ruined my plans since he's allergic)... so my heart goes out to you!

If kitty kidney issues are anything like human kidney issues - are they suggesting a low phosphorus and lower protein diet for her? I bet if they can get the immediate concerns under control like infection, a proper diet can work wonders. And of course, just loving the heck out of her will help too.

Keeping you and your kitties in my thoughts!!! Keep us posted.

Thanks for asking!

There is a small bit of hope! Her bloodwork came back with significantly lower levels! Still not in the "normal" range yet, but it's good that she has responded at all. So I kept her at the vet tonight as well to see if we can get the levels even lower. I'll take her home tomorrow after work and give her sub q fluids over the weekend and take her in monday to see if we were able to keep her values lower by the sub q fluids. The vets are worried that the size of her kidneys is due to a tumor since they are irregular in shape. There is really nothing they can do about that so we'll see what happens. Hopefully I can keep her values lower, keep her comfortable, and go from there.

@Lisa - yes her diet will definitely change. There are also nutritional supplements used for cats with kidney issues that help with the elimination on toxins so we will try that too. And i'll try to love the toxins out too Hopefully the elevation in white blood cells can be taken care of with the antibiotics, but if it's cancer around her kidneys...uhg... ::happy thoughts!::
