Now that I am back in the North I get the winter blues again. I try to hibernate in my house as much as possible with my electric blanket. I have only left the house once in the past 2 weeks. Do you get the winter blues and if so, what do you do to help combat it?

Seasonal Affective Disorder - my DH gets this BAD every year. We plan to try to have a (beach) vacation this time of year in the future once we've paid off our debt. DH finds that getting some sun - any sun - really helps. It's hard to do when it's so cold outside (he's a wimp about the cold) but if we get an odd temperate day, then we try to go to the park or something. That and vitamin D supplements help him!
The rest of the time, I succumb to it. I make stews and soups, hot chocolate, start a fire in the fireplace and cuddle with the dogs or DD. :-)

I get the winter blues but Dh dosen't. His favorite time of the year is winter. He is so warm blooded that winter is the only time he isn't so hot. He loves it outside in the winter where I try to stay inside.

My grandmother was from Norway, so maybe it's in my DNA but I am not affected by winter at all. I love it.

Missy I have lived here all my life and every winter I get depressed.... this year not so much and I've been tanning while at the gym and my mom told me that is why.... So who knows maybe it helps. I do try to still get out and go shopping and just get out of the house otherwise I seem to feel worse.

With DH not working we are totally broke which is making it even worse for me this winter because I am pretty much stuck in the house. Can't go shopping and it is too cold out to go to the park. I think I have a few tanning sessions left, I will call tomorrow and find out. Maybe that will help, Thanks Katie.

take some extra Vitamin D. We northerners lack Vit D in the winter because we absorb it from the sun. So, taking a supplement may help you.

yeah, I get the blues BAD. It wasn't this way until I moved to Iowa. Winters are more harsh and longer here than what I was used to. In the future I plan on trying to take a cruise or tropical vacation during the winter. First I have to get through school and the next five winters though. GRRR.

Definitely take a Vitamin D supplement. It should be D3 and it should be an oil form.

Well I have gone from California to Belgium, so yeah I get depress. I'm forced to go out of the house everyday because of DS, he needs to get out a couple of hours a day.

I found that taking a good Omega 3-6-9 supplement, extra B-12, B6 and Inositol really have helped me a lot. I also got my thyroid under control last year, so that banished the crushing fatigue which was a relief. I also started to go to an acupuncturist as well - I go to the local traditional chinese medicine school here so its not such a hit to the pocketbook - $25 an hour for the student clinic and $35 an hour for the graduate clinic. So far...I notice a HUGE difference in my motivation, general energy and feeling cold inside - which I think is the worst.
I think there is also acupressure stuff you can look up online, its not as effective as acupuncture, but I think it can help and its free :-) Or you can ask DH to help out, which is always a good thing for the blues!
