And you know its never good when they call you personaly.

My blood work came back Positive for MTHFR. So Now I have that on top of PCOS.
Guess I need to do my research on it. All he said was I will need to give myself a shot once a week for my whole pregnancy. I did not know what else to ask because I know nothing about this.
Not sure what to think... Information overload right now.

Lindsey Kary (KaryRN) and I'm pretty sure Nicole have it. It is treatable and at least now you have answers and hopefully that is what you need to have your Rainbow baby. I also have it but my doctor treats mine with a baby aspirin..

I have MTHFR (2 gene mutations)....My doctor said that usually it's just treated with baby aspirin, but they've started me on lovenox because of my late losses...You'll also need to take extra folic acid (I take 4000 mcg a day)....I'm glad you got an answer and now it can be treated next time your pregnant ...I don't know a lot about it, so hopefully others can be more help.

Oh Lindsey - I am so sorry. You have been through so much in the last 2 months and it is almost like "Will it stop and I get good news"?

I guess on the up side it is treatable so you will have your rainbow baby! ((hugs))

Glad it is treatable. I think my doctor said that if that was all I had they would just do baby asprin. I wonder if you could go ahead and do that along with the shot...?

I hope next time you will have your rainbow baby!

You need to find out which mutation you have. There's an A and a C. Some people have one copy of one mutation (heterozygous MTHFR), some have a copy of each (Compound Heterozygous MTHFR) and some people have 2 copies of the same mutation (Homozygous MTHFR).

Generally just the Compond Hetero and Homo versions require treatment with Lovenox though if you are simply Hetero but have a history of losses, agressive treatment is definitely worth a try. If you are just heterozygous then generally baby aspirin is sufficient to treat it. In addition to either baby aspirin or Lovenox, a very large dose of folic acid is recommended to help prevent birth defects. Folic acid is a B vitamin and is water soluble so you can't take too much, anything your body doesn't need it eliminates in your urine.

I have 1 copy of C677T & also 1 copy of A1298C.
When I get pregnant I will need shots of Lovenox or Hepron.
I asked about still taking baby asprin and he said no need to with the shots.

I was also called to pick up a script at Walgreens for Folgard (b-12,b-6, and folic all in one pill).

Im going to try to do some googleing since I have no clue about this.

Lindsey, I'm so sorry that you keep getting hit with bad news But I am so glad that you have an answer and a plan for treatment. I have a different clotting disorder, and I am doing the daily Lovenox injections right now. They aren't fun, but they really aren't horrible.

This means you are considered compound heterozygous. It is definitely one that they recommend the use of Lovenox for.

I am Homozygous for the A1298C, I only required a baby aspirin. And the one thing that was not mentionted. If you have elevated homosystine levels, YOU are at higher risk for blood clots with the MTHFR mutation.

Below is some great links that I had saved after I was told I had it. Yes you have an issue, yes it is GREAT!, it is HORRIABLE!, Yes it is TREATABLE! When I got told we have a problem it was after three loss... I was happy, pissed, ANGRY! I lossed three babies... and a baby aspirin... a baby aspirin was all I needed? ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I hope this is it for you! I pray that you will have your rainbow baby(ies) in your arms soon!

With MTHFR, there are two different genes identified for this mutation, and it's possible to be "heterozygous," "compound heterozygous," or "homozygous." The MTHFR gene mutation has varying degrees of possible implications. The order of potential severity from most to least is:

1. C677T & C677T (Two C Copies - C677T Homozygous)
2. C677T & A1298C (One Copy of Each The C & A - Compound Heterozygous)
3. C677T (One C Copy - C677T Heterozygous)
4. A1298C & A1298C (Two A Copies - A1298C Homozygous)
5. A1298C (One A Copy - A1298C Heterozygous)

The MTHFR mutation is fairly common in the general population. Approximately 44% of the population is heterozygous and another approximate 12% are homozygous for the MTHFR mutation. Compound heterozygous and homozygous MTHFR have the highest incidences of being linked to implantation failure, late term miscarriages, specific birth defects and overall vascular health. Whichever type of MTHFR you have, it should not be discounted, particularly if there is a personal or family history of any such incidences.

What Are the Implications?
Any and all of the mutations can affect homocysteine levels, but there is much dispute as to whether elevated homocysteine levels are actually needed in order for MTHFR to cause medical complications. Many other MTHFR patients have normal homocysteine levels; yet have had implantation problems, miscarriages, and/or stillbirth(s) due to clotting problems. So it is important to find out what your Homocysteine levels are (although again, normal doesn't necessarily mean all is well). This is a serious field and MTHFR is a serious condition, so consulting an expert is wise. Research shows that high homocysteine levels and/or those with the mutation show a higher propensity for thrombosis (blood clots), arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries), Alzheimer's, stroke, heart attack, Fibromyalgia, migraines (especially with "Aura" migraines), osteoporotic fractures, bone marrow disorders and for those of child bearing years, it has found to be connected to higher incidences of down's syndrome, spina bifida, other neural tube defects, trisomy, miscarriage, stillbirth, implantation failure, placental abruption, preeclampsia, higher incidences of autism, amongst others. Additionally, if you test positive you may want to have your parents, siblings, and any children you may already have tested, as well.
There are a few positives to this disorder. Because folate is necessary for cellular division, there is support that shows having this disorder can actually help keep certain types of cancer cells from multiplying as rapidly, so there are some benefits from having this mutation.
