Sorry I am mostly a lurker, but I have posted a few times and gotten some really good advice here.
My question is, after a natural miscarriage can HCG stay in your system to the point where you HAVE to have a d&c to clear it out?
My level was down to 78 last Tuesday also had u/s that showed some leftover tissue. Going tomorrow for a repeat beta to see where the # is now. I did test today at home and it's still + so I assume tomorrows beta will still be above 5
Thanks so much!
oh and my dr said they would like to see me have a cycle to clear out that tissue before moving to a d&c

Please feel free to post here at any time.. If you have retained tissue your HCG can stay raised and usually then you do have to have a D&C to have the retained tissue removed. I am very sorry your having to go through this.

Have your tried Cytotec? I would ask about that before D&C.
So sorry you are still going through this. Its so hard to start healing when it just drags on.

I have done Cytotec 2 times already. It did not work at all the first. The second I had BAD clots heavy bleeding and it lasted 11 days.
I guess if my level doesn't drop tomorrow they will know maybe that we need to do and d&c. Only thing is my insurance will not pay for it if it is coded related to pregnancy so I don't know what I would do then. Pay out of pocket I guess.
Thank you for your help!

It is extremely expensive for a D&C if you have to pay out of pocket. For an overnight ER and D&C when I had my cervical ectopic I am still staring at a $25,000 bill. When I had to have my D&C the first time - since we did not have insurance my midwife suggested I go to a clinic. It wasn't the most pleasant experience emotionally but we only paid I think $550.
I am so sorry you are going through this... Like a loss isn't hard enough? ((Hugs))

I know how that is.
I have insurance and it still cost me $3500.00
I know there is a pill they can give you to force your period to start I have no clue if it would work or not but maybe these ladies have some insite on if it would help get things moving and clear you out?

They should be able to code it as something other than pregnancy. Check with your doctors office. It could be coded as removal of cyst or something similar.

They did say I could start provera (which kick starts AF have used it several times as i have PCOS as well) once my level was down to 0
just wondering if I will get it down to zero
and HOLY COW did not know a d&c was that much that's ridiculous

Yeah I did tell them that if they coded it as pregnancy related insurance would not pay they then said lets try to get the tissue out with your normal menstrual and if that does not work and you still need the d&c we can coded it a "needed" medical procedure instead of elective.

Missy I dont think the clinics will take you if you allready passed the baby and just have some retained tissue.... Because I was going to sugest that.
But its worth a call? For me it was going to be $700.00 because I had it already set up but I passed the baby before my appointment came.

I do not know much about mid-wives and clinics LOL that sounds bad. But when you say a clinic do you mean like a Planned Parenthood kind of clinic?
I am just not familiar with any other type of pregnancy/baby clinic other than that. (perhaps I just sounded even more dumb lol)

Since your last level was a 78, I would give it a few more weeks to see if it goes down by itself. Ive seen women on here have levels like this range for well over 4wks and it just trickles down by itself. There does not necessarily have to be any retained tissue making your levels go down slowly......as long as they are not going up. If you could avoid the d&c, and wait it out just a bit longer, thats what I would suggest. I have had several d&c's and they always delay my O'ing in the months after......therefore making it longer/harder to ttc. If your u/s showed nothing in it, than I would wait it out IMO.......Good luck, and Im sorry you ever had to experience this to begin with.

Thank you very much I am definitely hoping they go down on their own but I do have retained tissue makes me nervous as well BC I miscarried over 40 days ago. Hope it's not bad for it to be there for too long.
I called the clinic they said there was nothing they could do.
It's just really hard BC I would nearly be half way thru the pregnancy and here we are still just trying to get thru the end of the miscarriage

Hugs I am so very sorry your going through this. Another thing I can suggest I'm not sure how it is where you live but here even if you don't qualify for Medical Assistance they have a program that if you have an outrageous medical bill they will pay it or if you have several for a medical condition they will pay it. It is something you can look into and Missy & Lindsey you as well. I just found out about this the other day through a friend who doesn't qualify but had to have a D&C Her insurance wouldn't cover it but MA did.

Oh my insurance covered it.... it was $12,000.00 BEFORE and $3500.00 after.
I have a $2000 yearly deductable.
And we make to much money for M/A I think its under $18,000 a year here.

If the numbers are going down and you're not bleeding, then you probably haven't retained anything so a D&C won't do any good. It's just a waiting game. Your doctor will tell you if they think a procedure is necessary.

U/S showed that I do have retained tissue but I have not bled for over 30 days. The dr said if a menstrual cycle (which I haven't had yet since the loss) does not clear out the tissue I will gave to have a d&c I don't know what's going on.
Thanks for the info on the medical assistance, but we make mire than the allowable as well to qualify :-(
