I know it's a real industry, and that you can definitely make a living doing it. I'm in a course for it right now. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has information on it on their website, and there are a ton of MT firms out there. I've wanted to do it for a long time, but haven't known how to tell the difference between scams and real programs. MT is no cakewalk, you have to learn anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, then put it all together and dictate a ton of notes before you can even take the test to graduate. Then each firm you apply to has its own testing process before being hired.
I only started recently, but my (limited) medical background is helping me breeze through the portion of the course where you just learn stuff. I'm sure once I get to the other half, the practical application, I'll slow down. So far I'm enjoying the program (although, again, it IS HARD), and MT forums online all say that the school I'm taking it through is one of the top three MT schools.
I'm lucky. As an active duty military spouse (ranks E-1 through E-5 and O-1, O-2) there's a Department of Defense program that allows me to take the course for free, and this is one of the schools they will pay for, which makes me trust it even more. This program also provides job placement assistance afterward, so that's nice to know as well.
If anyone's ever been interested in it, I can send you information on the top three schools and you can do some research from there. There ARE other schools out there, but these three are the best-known, and if you graduate from a lesser-known school they probably don't have partnerships worked out to get their new-grads hired. These three do.
Just let me know, I can shoot you a message. I don't want to advertise specifically for a school here, but I can give you websites for the top three and a little info on why I chose my school above the other two.

June 25, 2011: Natural miscarriage... Can we please catch a break here?
Nov. 2011: 100mg Clomid followed by 2mg Estrogen, Ovidrel trigger, and 200mg progesterone suppositories 2x/day 14 days. BFN.
Dec. 2011: 2nd medicated cycle. BFN.
Jan. 2012: Took a month off to breathe...
Feb. 2012: Same regimen of Clomid and other meds, add IUI. 2 eggs and 8.5 million swimmers. BFN.
March 2012: 75 IU Follistim CD 3-11, follie scan CD 8 showed 6 follies likely to mature. Triggered, IUI on CD 14, 4 million swimmers. BFN.
April 2012: 75 IU Follistim CD 3-10. Scan showed 2 mature follies, 2 almost certain to mature, and two not likely but possible. (All 6 evenly and perfectly spaced out between the left and the right.) Triggered, IUI CD 13 with 5 million swimmers. BFN.
May 2012: 75 IU Follistim starting CD 3. Waiting to O. Timed intercourse. Likely 5 follies to mature.

One of my best friends took a course (similar to, if not the same as the one you are taking) and they offered job placement. She's been working as an MT for a few years now. The upside is that she is able to continue to be a SAHM and the hours are very flexible for her. She has had issues with not enough work coming in and doctors that are hard to understand. For the most part, though, she is happy with it and really likes the firm she works for. It's definitely something I've thought of looking into.

My sister was a medical transcriptionist working for a local hospital. After the first year, she worked from home and could complete her full time day's worth of work in about 5 hours... it sounded like a pretty sweet deal I bet you love it, Erin!

I would love some information on the 3 schools and any other info you may have also. I have always wanted to do Medical Transcriptionist but never knew which program was a scam and which one wasn't. I do have my medical billing/coding certification so maybe that knowledge would help me with a MT course. So glad I saw this post and looking forward to your PM.

Lurker here! I am in Canada and just took an MT course, which is supposed to be the best in Canada and is actually probably the same one you are taking in the U.S. I graduated with high honors in March and just started my internship (last night) as an independent contractor for a company in Australia. I think I am going to like this career, although it is a big learning curve. Good Luck!

Megan, I sent you an e-mail including a link to one Canadian-based course I know of. They partner with my U.S. school. Although they are much, much more expensive than my school, even after converting Canadian/U.S. dollars... I'm not sure what the price difference is all about, or why you may or may not need to graduate from a Canadian-based school if you're in Canada... More info in the PM
