I had appointment at the hospital today to get all of the pre op testing done before my gallbladder surgery. The nurse was going over what blood test I needed to have done today and what other testing needed to be done. At the end of the conversation she says we will give you a sample cup for you to take home with you and bring back the day of surgery. I asked her what the sample cup was for and she said we need a urine sample so we can do a pregnancy test before the surgery. I looked at her and said I am not pregnant I just had a miscarry in March and a d&c on March 21st. The nurse just looked at me and said are you sure you don't want the test. I turned to her and said doing a pregnancy test on me would show postive since I still have HCG in my system. The nurse looks at me all serious and said so you are declining the pregnancy test before you surgery. What part don't you understand. I just told you I had a miscarry in March and I still have HCG in my system. Yes, I am declining the test.
On another note: My ob finally ordered a hcg blood test. I went and had my blood drawn at 3 and the nurse just called back and said my hcg is 179. My ob still wants to do an u/s to make sure there isn't any tissue left and that everything is ok. I have the u/s scheduled for Wednesday of next week which my follow up appointment is Tuesday of next week with my ob. My ob isn't happy about having the u/s after his appointment so they are supposed to be calling with a new time for the u/s.

But as a nurse you would think she would be somewhat educated . . . I hope everything goes well with your surgery and u/s.

I agree with the other ladies. I am glad your HCG is going down and that they are going to do an ultrasound next week.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. I've had nurses act like that, and when I got upset about the questioning they said it was policy that they ask that way and have confirmation of a decline. Doesn't make you feel any better though.

Im sorry, just what you need, to be upset already before your surgery, to add to the anxiety. Why cant they be more sensitive, especially right after you tell them you just miscarried. I am angry just hearing about this! ~hugs

If the nurse doesn't work in obstetrics, she likely doesn't know anything about hcg levels after a miscarriage. It's not something they routinely teach in nursing school.
I'm so sorry that you have to keep having salt poured in your wound, Stacie. I hope your surgery goes smoothly.

Thank you for listening to my little rant. It helps having someone else to talk to that will understand where I am coming from.

Thank you for asking Katie. I am feeling better. I am happy knowing that my hcg is down to 179 already. I love that my ob wants to make sure everything is ok by doing the u/s. I guess I will have to wait on the testing. I was kind of hoping to be able to get all the test ordered when I saw him next week. I just feel like time is slipping away from me.

I'm glad that you are feeling better Stacey. Maybe when you go into the doctors you can ask him if you can speed up the process?! It seems like he is very understanding.

Sorry about that nurse. Even if she didn't know about miscarriages and had to ask a certain way for legal reasons, she at least could have been gentle about it rather than being all business. Being a nurse = caring for people, and that definitely wasn't caring. I'm glad your HCG numbers are declining. One suggestion? You might not want to look at the screen when they do the ultrasound. I almost had to have one after Drew because of a potential infection and I knew going in that I was going to ask them to turn the screen away from me.
