My first RE appointment was about 2 to 3 hours long. You go over your whole history (bring in as much previous medical records as you can), and you will talk about what you think is going on. Also, if they haven't already, they will request previous medical records as well. Mine did a vaginal ultrasound, just to check for any abnormalities, measured my ovaries, checked for follies, checked my lining, etc. Then she ran some blood work based on my history. She also had my hubby do another SA to check his swimmers (he had just one a year prior and his levels dropped dramatically), and she also ran some blood work on him.
She then laid down a "maybe" plan, and talked about what our options could be. Afterwards, she scheduled another visit to dicuss test results and then make a formal plan. Ours turned out to be male factor infertility, and unfortunately our only current option is IVF (we were planning to do IUI). Expect to discuss everything, make a list of questions, and do not hold back. Discussing how much it will cost is also a huge factor. Most insurances do not cover fertility treatments, and some (like mine) will not cover tests either. Our clinic offers a payment system. We are paying for our IVF in installments.
