I Keep going back and forth about the HSG the DR suggested I have done. I really do not think I am pregnant this cycle so A/F should be here in 3-6 days. I am supposed to call at the start of my next A/F to schedule my HSG.
How many of you have had them done? I am reading things online and it is scaring me.
Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?
Did you have a lot of pain during or after?
Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused).
Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online).
Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?
What should I do to prep my self for it?
What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the HSG and scared that will totally ruin it for me.)

I am just not sure what to do Google is always my worst enemy because when I research it I see nothing but horror story's of woman losing there fertility because of a bad reaction to the die, or it being the most painful thing they have ever had done even worse than child birth.

I am freaked out about having the thing put up there that injects the die. I had a IUD put in after my daughter was born and that was horribly painful so my mind keeps thinking of that.

I had one last month.

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?
No

Did you have a lot of pain during or after?
Some pressure at the very end as the dye was making its way into the fallopian tubes

Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused).
None

Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online).
No. The tech said was incredibly rare and that the symptoms would manifest in 24 hours. They prescribe an antibiotic as a routine thing, but I didn't take it. I figured if I got the symptoms, I would take it then.

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?
4 Ibuprofen 2 hours prior

What should I do to prep my self for it?
Calm down. It was really easy and I had no problems, pain or bleeding.

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the HSG and scared that will totally ruin it for me.)
I wore a pad that would catch any dye (which is clear) leakages or other spotting. I didn't have to wear it for more than a few hours.

I just had one on Monday. They also did a test transfer for my IVF right before that. Honestly, I felt nothing at all with the test transfer. I barely felt anything with the HSG either. I think I cramped slightly when the dye was inserted, but that is about it. I was like, "this is it?" I was given a pad afterward for the "leakage," and that was it. When I had my IUD put in years ago, it hurt a LOT more than this.

I was already on antibiotics, so I wasn't told to take anything different. It wasn't even suggested that I take something for pain. I didn't have any blockages, so maybe that's why mine did not hurt. My sister had one a few months ago and they suggested taking a valium before hers, so she did. I hope that helps.

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?
The following cycle I did but it also ended in a loss (not due to the HSG)
Did you have a lot of pain during or after?
Yes I did but mine was caused from them removing Endo. I had A Hystography, HSG & Endo removal all at the same time
Did you have bleeding from the HSG?
I did have spotting for 2 days but it could have been from the other stuff
Did you get an infection?
They gave me an antibiotic. They said they always do that as a precaution
Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?
She said she normally to take 2 Tylenol about half and hour before
What should I do to prep my self for it?
Just relax It's honestly not bad and it's a routine thing.
What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long?
I had cramping for a day or two but nothing too bad so I think you will be fine

I had a sonohis which is similar except they use saline instead of the dye. Honestly, I felt a pinch when the tube went in and I yelped for a second but when it was all over I was like "really, this is it?" and I have a very, very low tolerance for pain. DH and I both took an antibiotic for a few days beforehand but that was also to rule out other things. I had no bleeding and a tiny bit of leakage from the saline. (used a pad)

Stay away from Google with this!! Its not that bad.

The reason I ask this is because I hear a lot of ladies on here get Antibiotics with there D&C's and my DR did not. So I did not know if I should just ask for it?

I also wonder if I ask for a valium if they will prescribe me one? I do more freaking out about this stuff and end up making it worse in my head than it really is.

Ok this makes me feel better. That IUD was HORRIBLE and I will never ever let them talk me into getting another one.
I was imagining that pain from where they pinch your cervix to get the IUD in plus the cramping of the die.

I just pray there is no blockage because then I know I will have pain.

I had the same test that Missy had done. It wasn't had at all. I didn't even feel the pinch of the catheter being put in. There was a little cramping when they injected the saline, but nothing worse than I've had with AF. My RE prescribed an antibiotic for 3 days after just as a precaution. He said that's his normal protocol. I was a little surprised, because my old OB didn't prescribe any antibiotics after my D&C and that was a whole lot more invasive than the sonohis. I didn't have any bleeding afterward. I wore a pad afterward for a little bit for any saline leakage. I hope everything goes perfectly for you if you decide to go for it!

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG? No, but on the 2nd. cycle following HSG, I got my rainbow baby.

Did you have a lot of pain during or after? Uncomfortable during, but not pain. Slight cramping for about 2hrs. after.

Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused). Spotted for about the same time, two hours.

Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online). No infection, no antibiotics.....although I here it is common to prescribe them sometimes.

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds? Ibruprofin one hour before, and thats all I took.

What should I do to prep my self for it? Just take the Advil or Ibruprofin. Where a pad, as there will be slight spotting and leaking of the dye.

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the : Like I said, I only spotted for about 2hrs.....nothing more.

I had one done last year.

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?No

Did you have a lot of pain during or after? I had some pressure and then I had a lot of pain. Although the doctor thinks one of my tubes was blocked and pushing the dye through helped to unblock the tube.

Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused). I didn't have any

Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online). The doctgor prescribe an antibiotic as a routine thing.

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?4 Ibuprofen 2 hours before the test.

What should I do to prep my self for it?Try to relax. Even though I had a lot of pain the test wasn't that bad.

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the HSG and scared that will totally ruin it for me.) I wore a pad for couple of hours.

Google is ALL of our worst nightmares! It has some horrible things on there...I try to avoid it. But often fail because I am just too curious. Here is my experience and I hope it helps you in your decision.

How many of you have had them done? I had one done in December 2010

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG? The one immediately following (test done early Dec 2010 and got pregnant mid Jan 2011).

Did you have a lot of pain during or after? Nope, not painful at all. I felt a little discomfort during because let's face it, having a speculum in there is not comfortable. But it was absolutely NOT painful.

Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused). I spotted for the rest of the day, along with the dye coming out. But it was gone by the next day. But I spot after an interal exam at the doc's every year too, so I think that was to be expected.

Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online). Not at all. I did not even take the antibiotics beforehand and I did not get an infection of any kind.

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds? He said I "could" take Advil or Motrin an hour before. But I didn't because I did not anticipate it would be painful and it wasn't. I did not need anything afterward either. As a matter of fact, me and my mom walked around the mall for three hours doing Christmas shopping and I was not at all uncomfortable.

What should I do to prep my self for it? You don't need to do anything. I know the doc might want you to take antibiotics and you should take them. Just in case. But I was bad and forgot a lot. Otherwise, you don't need any prepping.

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the HSG and scared that will totally ruin it for me.) My discharge resumed normal for my cycle about two days later. I did not bleed. The spotting lasted for the rest of the day but was gone the day after. And the discharge from the dye was gone the following day. I had about 12 hours of dryness (not uncomfortable, but no CM like normal for day 10) and then my regular discharge picked back up.

I will say that I have had an IUD put in as well and it was way, way more painful than this procedure. I actually was scared to get my IUD taken out because I thought the going in procedure was painful and I was sore for quite a while afterward, even though they said it would not hurt. I disagree. But this procedure, honestly, was nothing compared to that one. And certainly not anything like childbirth. Whoever said that online either A.) Had a horrible doctor who had never done one or B.) Had an extremely low tolerance for pain and wanted an epidural at 1cm dilated in childbirth.

And all of what I said WAS with a blocked tube. My left tube allowed nothing thru. They said they could not be sure it was completely blocked, since I got pregnant without too much trouble month-after-month. But that the dye was not making it thru and that it was something they (the RE) would address if needed. And I still felt no pressure or pain. The dye, I assume, just ran back out of my uterus/cervix and onto the pad I wore that day.

Hopefully that take some fear away. I will say I even had two procedures done that day. I did the saline test first (Mock Embryo Transfer) and then went for the HSG right after and they are basically the same (insert speculum, squirt in fluid, watch screen, leak for the day) and it was still not painful even though the HSG was after another procedure (which was also not painful). You can soooo do this

How many of you have had them done? One in April 2009
Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG? No but the following month I did with help of 50 mg clomid
Did you have a lot of pain during or after? I felt a mild pain and uncomfort. Actually less pain than when I start AF.
Did you have bleeding from the HSG? Yes I did have a little bleeding mixed with the dye but that ended some hrs after the actual HSG procedure.
Did you get an infection? No
Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds? I don't remember but he or the nurse might have.
What should I do to prep my self for it? Calm your nerves and stop reading what is available on the net especially google searches. It really is not as bad as the posted material online actually make it seem.
What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? Possibly a few hours the day of the procedure. They will provide you a sanitary pad. I do not recommend using a tampon as that can bring in bacteria and cause an infection.

I'm sorry I can't be of any help. I had an HSG last September while I was under as ob was doing a lap. Did not feel any discomfort after I woke up. Only thing that happened is that the morning after when I went to the toilet I was peeing blue they told me it was the dye coming out

If they don't you could always ask or ask ahead of time and tell them it would make you feel better just is case

It really isn't that bad. You could ask them too but I doubt they will. Most likely they will tell you to take Tylenol or something like that for it.

Thanks ladies. I am going to go for it. My guess is as long as A/F is on time it will be in about 2 weeks when I go in. I just pray insurance covers it because the hospital said its $1500.00.
With all the issues and the recent ectopic I better just go and do it.

You can always call and check with your insurance to see if they will cover it.

I did and was told if its a fertility issue they do not cover it but if coded properly it might be covered and they can not tell me for sure until its billed because its up to thier discression. But the hospital said since I have insurance they will let me pay what they would charge my insurance company (So maybe around $500.00 out of pocket.) But all these costs are adding up fast.

My DR said its going to be coded so they should cover it. He said he is going to code it as after ectopic to make sure there is no damage done to my tubes.

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?
No, but I got pregnant 4 months later...

Did you have a lot of pain during or after?
no, minimal pain for about 30 seconds when the dye was going through the tubes, thats it...

Did you have bleeding from the HSG? (I have read some ladies bleed for up to a month after and can not get pregnant for months or years because of problems caused).
Very small amount of spotting, lasted for maybe 12 hours and then I was good to go...

Did you get an infection? (I am finding this is common with reading online).
nope (Dr Google is not your friend)

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?
they said to take a Tylenol beforehand, but I forgot to...it wasnt necessary at all...

What should I do to prep my self for it?
stop reading horror stories about it on the internet

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? (I have a vacation that will probably be a day or 2 after the HSG and scared that will totally ruin it for me.)
I would think that a bit of spotting should be expected for maybe 24 hours...the vacation should definitely not be ruined...

You should get it done... That's one more thing to check off on your list to see if your tubes are blocked... It made me feel better knowing then not...... Thinking of you.....

Did you get pregnant the same cycle as the HSG?
No

Did you have a lot of pain during or after?
There were times where it was uncomfortable (like a pinching feeling)

Did you have bleeding from the HSG?
I did have some bleeding but it didn't last long... about 3 days for me....

Did you get an infection?
no infections....

Did your DR advise you to take any pain meds?I had to take 2 tylenol pills an hour prior

What should I do to prep my self for it?I would where comfy clothes, where a pad for afterwards just in case they do not supply you with one and relax... the procedure was not long at all (I'd say about ten min... you ladies agree?)... waiting to get it done was probably the wait.

What should I expect as far bleeding or discharge and for how long? I'd say for a few days but I wouldn't think that it would spoil your vacation.....
