So I just talked with my dr. He wants me to go to the hospital next week and get a quantative pregnancy test, a cbc, and a transvaginal ultrasound. I have read where they want to do an ultrasound to make sure it all cleared out, but I didn't know they have to do all the other blood work. With my first miscarriage I went to the hospital, so I am sure they ordered all that and I wasn't even aware of it. If you don't mind, let me know what you think. Do you think all of this is necessary? I guess I am worried because I have no idea the cost, and we haven't meet our insurance deductable. Thanks in advance!

((HUGS)) I am so sorry for your loss. The reason the do the quantitative test is to make sure your HCG level is dropping like it should or is negative. You could take pregnancy test at home to make sure it's getting light or negative. The trans-vaginal ultrasound is to make sure there is no retained tissue. I'm not sure how far along you were but usually that is if you were farther along. If your body retains tissue it can cause you an infection. You can call and request the pricing from your billing office at your doctors. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for answering my questions. I was 5½ weeks. I questioned the nurse, and she said that she would check with the doctor and get back to me. I feel back about questioning them, they are the doctor office. I just want to make sure it is all necessary.

I agree with Katie, call and ask about cost. I had a D&E at 12 weeks and didn't have anything, but a follow up appt at the docs, no bw or u/s. They did chromosomal testing afterwards on the baby and that was it. It may also have to do with any medical history you may have.

Oh and don't feel badly about questioning them, it's your body and your money, it is always good to know why they want to do anything to you!

Their request does sound normal, but if you were only 5 1/2 weeks along it was also quite early, so you could probably get away with not doing it too. otherwise i agree with everything Katie said too.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss! I had the U/S and a pregnancy test (not bloodwork), but I was 16 weeks along.

With only being 5 1/2 weeks along then I think you could get by with just a follow up blood work to confirm your HCG is down or even take a HPT to make sure they are getting lighter or negative.

I'm so sorry for you loss. i agree with Katie, I think just the blood work to make sure your leves are decreasing would be fine.

My doctor isn't making me do anything... but the request that you've been given does seem normal based off of what I've heard from others.

I agree with Katie. I was 6 weeks when I had my loss and the only thing they did was a follow up blood test to make sure the numbers were dropping. I POAS a couple of weeks later to make sure it was negative. I would definitely ask them why they want you to do so much. If it isn't necessary, then I would skip it and save yourself some money.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have discussed it with DH and I am waiting for the doctor to call back. I think we are going to opt out of all the tests.
