So, I bought a couple of wigs for my BF & me to wear with our costumes this weekend. The wigs are cheap and kind of ratty looking right now from being stored in their bags. What should I do to get them styled and looking decent? Should I wash them with shampoo? What about conditioner? I really wish I could use my flat iron, but I know that would just melt them. Any suggestions? I know this is a really bizarre question, but I want to make them look good. Thank you in advance!!

I cheated and googled it as I know nothing about wigs. I do know they sell non-heat rollers at walmart for just a few dollars. What is your costume?
****

You can wash it. Use a little shampoo and warm water. Even cheap wigs will hold some shape. Shake it out well when done and let dry overnight. You can even set it with rollers to give it more volume, but don't use heat! Curling irons or blowdryers will melt it!

Then style it when its on, try to secure with a few bobby pins. Cheap aerosol hairspray works the best, gel or pomade will get cloudy and make a mess.

I know nothing about wigs so I can't really help. Just wondering what you guys are dressing up as? Make sure you post pictures. Are you guys going to a Halloween party?

I agree with Missy! I had a pink wig about 3 years ago and tried using a curling iron on it.... epic FAIL! Lol. Oh please

Thanks ladies!! Great advice!! I will wash them when we get to the hotel tomorrow night. We (my BF, his DD, & I) are going as vampire type people. It's not too creative but his DD wanted us to be similar and those costumes seemed to work well. My wig is supposed to be long, black, & straight. It's a bit scraggly so it needs some help. My BF's wig looks a lot like Robert Smith from The Cure. It needs a lot of help. Right now, when he puts it on, it looks like he's wearing road kill on his head. I just went to the store and got some hair gel and will do my best to style it so that the spikes do what they're supposed to. I also have some good hair spray to keep everything in place.

Melissa, we're going down to Salem, MA to take part in all of the fun Halloween festivities there. It'll be fun and educational for my BF's daughter so we thought it would be a great trip to make. I'm most excited that I'll get the chance to meet the original Michael Myers from the Halloween movies. I am TERRIFIED of Michael Myers....like, I avoid the aisle in the store that has his mask hanging in it, LOL!

How fun Sarah!! Have a great time down there... I've done some wig stuff and usually washing them, or even just wetting them helps a lot. You might want to think about those velcro rollers... you can put them in for a little body or curl and just let the hair dry in them. You have to be careful taking them out though...

Good luck! Can't wait to see some pics!

Thanks ladies! Hopefully I'll be able to get some good pics! I found out we may be getting snow, but it shouldn't be too much. I'll pack my winter coat just in case.
