DH and I both had fertility appts this morning: me with my RE for a CD11 u/s to see if I was ready to trigger for the IUI this cycle and him as a follow up on his 3rd SA with the MIF specialist. Good news: I responded well to the clomid and have three follies over 20 and one more that should reach 20 before we trigger. Bad news: clomid thinned my lining on my very first cycle of taking the lowest dose, so I am taking estrogen vaginally for a couple of days to try to improve it. I was feeling pretty good about all of this until I talked to DH about his appt.

Basically his really horrible SA results last time were not a fluke. He has 0 normal morphology and his doctor pretty much flat-out said we were wasting our time trying an IUI right now. We have two options: he can start hormone therapy and have surgery to have a variocele repaired in hopes that the combination improves his morphology or we can do ICSI-IVF. The doctor told him there was basically a 50% chance that the drugs/surgery makes any material difference in his morphology (his odds are lower than most due to some other factors) and it will be 3-6 months before we will know one way or the other.

sorry this is so long. I just needed to get it out

I seriously hate fertility problems and I really wish that no one had to deal with them. If I were you, I would try the hormone therapy and the surgery before I attempted IVF with ICSI. My husband and I just did that back in July and it is a lot to take in. Plus it did not work for us and we were out thousands of dollars for nothing. Hopefully everything works out though and you get a beautiful baby out of all this hard work.

I'm so sorry you got bad news where your DH is concerned! I agree with the pp who said to try the hormone therapy and surgery option first. The other procedure is SO tough on your body from what I've heard. Good luck!

Thanks ladies. We will try the meds/surgery first. It only makes since since ICSI will cost $15K. But he will not be able to have the surgery until late December, so we will not really know where we are until April-June. I don't know how I am going to stay sane between now and then.
