My doctor doesn't strongly believe in the whole IUI and IVF process.. He said that he had friends where they went throught the procedure a few times and had no succes and then when they took a break they had their miracle baby.
I've been waiting way too long but am so afraid of the IUI process. I also don't like the fact that we have to pay for this procedure that some ladies who are not even trying does not have to go through... Each cycle I tell myself that I'm going to give clomid another shot or I'm going to take a break but am I really prolonging my chance of ever getting pregnant?

I did an IUI/clomid cycle and while we did not get pregnant, I have no regrets. I was in the mind set that we had tried naturally long enough and if I gave up and did not go the medical assistance route and give it 100% that I would end up feeling like I did not try hard enough.
Go with your heart and do what you feel is best for you!

We were denied the IUI route when that was the way I wanted to go. My doctor told us that it was a miracle that we ever got pregnant on our own before. Then we basically got jerked over with our failed IVF (thousands of dollars later). Two months after that, we got pregnant naturally with the first try of soy. This was after 3 1/2 years of trying with 1 loss and 1 chemical.
You have to remeber that the chance of pregnancy with IUI is only like 15%, but if you are determined to try whatever and go in with an open mind, then go for it. Just because one doctor does not believe in it, does not mean that you shouldn't try it if that is what you want to do.

I don't want to give false hope or anything, but IUI works for me. I've had 2 IUIs and they both worked. I have never conceived without some type of procedure (HSG a few days before conception with #1, IUI with 2nd and 3rd pregnancies). But I have a 100% success rate with IUI so far. I know that is not to be expected, but I know it works for me when nothing else does. Clomid doesn't help me, because I ovulate normally already, so Clomid doesn't fix whatever my (undiagnosed) problem is. So I'm a BIG believer in IUI.
Full disclosure - My first pregnancy from IUI ended in m/c at about 5 weeks and my baby from the second IUI had lethal birth defects, so I lost both of those babies - BUT!! I don't think that had anything to do with the fact that they both were the result of IUI. I just thought I should mention it since I am kind of endorsing the procedure. And I do endorse the procedure!

I have not had an IUI yet... DH and I plan to see an RE after we get our income taxes back early next year and we are going to go the IUI route if we aren't pregnant by then. I agree with the other ladies though you have to do what you feel you need to do. DH and I have been trying 3 1/2 years with so many losses and no living children that we need to go to the next step.

I have had IUI recommended for me. For one thing, we've been trying for 7 months with no success, and for another...with my age, the docs want to increase my chances. It's not a huge increase, but better than my chances of conceiving naturally. I am quite shocked, actually, that your doctor doesn't believe in IUI or IVF. I would think he'd want to try whatever it takes. He is supposed to be in your court. How long does he want you to keep trying naturally before he'll finally agree that maybe a different method should be looked into? I do agree with the others though. Ultimately, the decision is yours. This whole process is absolutely exhausting and it is hard to figure out what is right for you. For me, if I had known this was going to take so long, I would've tried to do IUI much sooner.
Good luck, and let us know what you decide. We're all here to support you no matter what!

A few month back I was debating about switching doctors because I feel like everytime I switch I'm taking steps back... I just switch to this new one because the old one just seemed to not care and on my first meeting he told me his friends story about spending all this money on treatments and failed but got pregnant natuarlly after the ordeal... so he said that he doesn't believe in it but I'm sure he would be supportive to my decisions... I hadn't really expressed interest about IUI or IVF to him... but thinking that I should explore other options since clomid isn't doing the trick (also just learned that clomid thins out lining... and I've been on it a while and 150mg...) I can't agree with you more.. it really is exhausting... I think because my SIL is due this week is making want to be a bit more determined to get pregnant. It hurts emotionally but am gratful to have a fuel to start my engine...

I'm about there with you Katie.. 3 years and counting... I think next cycle I'll take a break and the following cycle do IUI... It's just unfair that we would have to think like this while others say "oh it was an accident...."

Has your doctor checked your lining? It would concern me if you have been on Clomid more than a month or two w/o your doctor checking your lining. It does tend to thin the lining and the longer you take it the worse it can thin you out. My first month taking the lowest dose of Clomid thinned my lining a lot. I had to use estrogen to thicken it, but we never would have known that w/o monitoring.
I'm surprised your doctor feels that way about IVF. IUI doesn't have the greatest success rates overall, although when you take into account that the only people who have the procedure already have IF issues I don't think it is that terrible. But IVF has an overall 60%-65% success rate (or at least the clinics here do) - which is pretty hard to argue with given that it is almost always the procedure of last resort for couples dealing with infertility. Nothing is 100% foolproof, of course, or we would all be doing it
We chose to move to IUIs after ~18 months of TTC#2 and diagnoses of one potential blocked tube and MIF. There are concrete reasons why IUI would help in our scenario: using Clomid and monitoring we can increase egg production ensuring that I ovulate at least one (and ideally multiple) mature egg on the side with a good tube and by inserting the spermies exactly where they need to go we don't have to rely on them to get there on there own (which they likely can't do given the morphology and motility issues).
It is so hard to decide the best route to take. The whole process is so emotional (and expensive) and there are no guaranties on anything. HUGS sweetie!!

I'm a huge fan of IUI! We used Clomid and timed BD, but it didn't work, because the Clomid thinned my lining horribly. We did a round of injectables (Follistim) and IUI and I got my BFP after a year of waiting. I wish you good luck in whatever you choose!

Dh and I did had a IUI with injectables (Follistim) in June of 2010. This was after our old Ob told us we couldn't get pregnant on our own. We did get pregnant with our IUI. Sadly this would be our first loss. I believe in IUI's. Like everyone else has said though you need to follow your heart.

Personally, I think that IUI ups your chances a little bit, but for us, the real difference was using injectable medication (Follistim)...I'm older, and Clomid didnt work at all for us...I got pregnant on our first injectable cycle (with IUI)...and strongly feel that even if we hadnt had the IUI itself (DH has no swimmer problems), we would have gotten pregnant because the Follistim really helped with egg quality and also gave me more eggs to choose from (of my 4 ripe eggs, only one of them fertilized)...
good luck!
