I have a question about progesterone. I don't know if it's a question that really belongs here, but the pregnancy loss board is so slow.

How do you know if low progesterone caused your miscarriage? Can you have a normal pregnancy and then have low progesterone the next time around?

I'm asking, because I guess I'm trying to think of WHY we lost this baby, and if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening again. I can't wait to get pregnant again, but I'm also terrified of losing another baby.

Thank you, ladies!

I think most of the times it is just a chromosomal abnormality.

I too, however, have an inkling that low progesterone may have been the cause of my miscarriage. I only think that though because I was (and still am) breastfeeding my youngest (she just turned 1)....which is known to cause low progesterone. But my midwife insists that breastfeeding couldn't have caused the m/c. So.....eh...who knows.

Anyways... I've also read that low progesterone causes miscarriages, but there is disagreement....some say that low progesterone is a symptom of a failing pregnancy, and not the cause.

So...I don't really have an answer to your question. I think it depends on who you ask..opinions differ on this issue in the medical community.

I don't have a lot offer, but I was talking with a woman who has had 5 children. She said she didn't need progesterone supplements until after her 2nd or 3rd child. Every time for everyone is different I guess.

Progesterone can vary from cycle to cycle so while you may get pregnant and have a sticky bean the next pregnancy your progesterone could be low and the next time it could be normal again. As far as to why you had your loss you might never know, however, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING you did caused your loss. There was nothing you could have done to change it and as much as it sucks you can't let yourself think that you could have prevented it If you think your progesterone is low talk to your doctor. To test that they do it 7dpo. And then if it's low they should start you every cycle at 3-4dpo on it. I hope that helps you some hun. And please if you have any questions feel free to ask us.
