A girl in TTC #1 just posted that you need to take a B-complex and not just B6 to lengthen your luteal phase or it can result in an imbalance of B vitamins and put you at risk of miscarriage. I didn't know it needed to be B-complex and I've only been taking Vitamin B6 50mg. I'm now petrified and as soon as the water for the rice is boiling for dinner I'm going to run out to CVS and get a B-complex, but can you please help calm me down? This is our first cycle post-loss TTC and I'm scared anyways, but this has me ready to cry.

I have read that somewhere, but it was an unsubstantiated source... like a message board. I've read about plenty of women just taking extra B6, getting pregnant, and then having a healthy baby.

From all the research I've done, and it was plenty, I learned that the B vitamins work best when taken with each other. So you get the best benefits from B6 if you're taking B12 or a complex. However, I don't believe there is any medical evidence whatsoever that taking B6 alone can lead to miscarriage.

If that were the case, then a lot of OBs would have lawsuits on their hands because they recommend just taking B6 to help curb morning sickness throughout the entire pregnancy. So if taking B6 without B12 leads to miscarriage, I don't think doctors would be recommending it.

That's my thoughts on it.

Oh, I also wanted to add that when I was TTC, I was taking 100mg of B6 and 100mcg of B12, not for fear of miscarriage but because I wanted to get the best benefits of B6 since I had such a LPD. When I got pregnant, I stopped the B12 altogether. In talking to the doctor, she recommended the B6 only if I wanted to help curb m/s, with no mention whatsoever of B12. I'll be 11 weeks pregnant tomorrow, with no complications so far.

I'm just trying to calm you, and I hope it's working.

Thanks, Adrienne, that really helps! I did run out to CVS and bought a B-50 combo that has 50mg each of B6 and B12 just in case. I think I'll take both to be on the safe side, especially if you say that the B12 can also help, but I'm glad to know that I haven't been doing anything to put my baby at risk if we do conceive this cycle!

i know nothing about this but it doesn't sound likely to me...and if taking vitamin B6 alone was proven to cause (or raise the risk of) miscarriages there'd be a dozen warning labels on your bottle. If there aren't any, I suspect this is just info getting twisted...I have heard a B6 deficiency can be a factor in miscarriage, but never that taking a small B6 supplement caused miscarriage.

Good luck to you this cycle!

Thanks, Lara! I was fighting back tears on my way to CVS so I'm so glad to hear from you ladies that everything should be fine. Poor DH bore the brunt of my fear in the form of my short temper, too. He was organizing right after I read this and moved some things I didn't want moved and I snapped at him. I feel so much better now!

Sorry I haven't been on this weekend but I wanted to tell you that my doctor told me to take the vitamin b complex but me taking just the b6 for awhile before that doesn't hurt me they just work better in combination. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I'm pretty sure it won't cause a m/c but taking the B12 as well will probably help you get more benefits.
