Or maybe it's a partially missed miscarriage? I'm not sure.

I think I actually lost the baby at 4 weeks or even a little earlier. 12 dpo my tests stopped getting darker, but they didn't get lighter either. Beta at 18 dpo, 34 and I knew it was over. Bled a lot the next day but not as much as I had read I would.

Exactly 7 days later my beta was 56, which is exactly what we did not want to see. So I guess the options at this point are that there is still tissue in there I need to shed or it is ectopic. The doctor really seems to think it is the first option (thankfully.)

He put me on Provera for 5 days and if my beta doesn't go down after I bleed, I will have to have a D&C which I DO NOT WANT. Ugh.

I have a repeat beta tomorrow and an appointment Tuesday, but don't expect anything to happen for like 10 days or so.

Has anyone been through the same thing? How soon could I expect to ovulate again?

I am so sorry for what your going through. It's always hard going through a loss and when your not sure what is going on it's even worse. Please make sure they follow you closely to make sure it's not ectopic! Those can be VERY dangerous. I've never heard of them doing the Provera for 5 days so I'm not sure how that would work. I'm had D&C's and I've also had natural losses. With my D&C I was farther along and afterwards my body was really out of whack. I had to go on meds to bring on AF because 9 weeks after my D&C AF still had not arrived. After my natural losses it varied as to when AF would come. Usually anywhere from 4-8 weeks. And your body should ovulate around 2 weeks after your HCG reaches zero but after a loss it's very hard to say as our bodies can be out of whack. We are here for you hun!

Thanks. The Provera is to induce a "period" and see if it clears out everything else. And yes, they seem to be monitoring me very closely.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Definitely the worry would be ectopic when the #s hang on like that...Even though the #s aren't doubling, if they aren't declining (and assuming it's not ectopic) it can delay the m/c process which generally doesn't get rolling until the numbers actually start to fall. With my 2nd loss the m/c process dragged on for about 3 weeks (more than 2 of which the hcg continued to rise just ungodly slowly). I'll hope you're close to the m/c starting naturally so you can avoid the D&C. I'm not familiar with using Provera to start, but I hope that works for you. HUGS

I don't have any experience with a missed miscarriage, but I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Thanks all. I bled a LOT a week ago, but apparently not enough. I *hope* the Provera works. I have PCOS so I've used it before, lol and it has worked in the past.

I had an early miscarriage about 5 weeks. I bled for about 2 weeks. My numbers went down, and then went up....and kept going up to over 900. Then, one month after the miscarriage started....I bled again, for 16 days. My numbers finally went down. Sometimes it just takes longer. In my case, there was a piece of tissue. I finally passed it on like day 14 of the 2nd bleed, which finally made my hcg numbers plummet.

Not that this matters but for the benefit of those reading this in the future, what you're describing is technically not a "missed" miscarriage, since you did have a bleed. A missed miscarriage is more like when there are no clues that anything is wrong and you only find out that the baby has passed away when you go in for an ultrasound. For example, an ultrasound at 9 weeks showing the baby stopped developing at 6 weeks. But it doesn't really matter what it's called, the pain and feelings are the same. I'm so sorry.
Now for your betas - it is concerning that it's not going down. Is it possible to do an ultrasound to see what's going on? I hope it's not an ectopic or a molar.

As for ovulating again - you won't ovulate again until all the tissue is gone (if it's still there).

Thank you so much. I am confused as to what to call it. I guess a miscarriage with retained tissue? I did only find out that the pregnancy was over after my beta, and I assume it had been over for about a week, but I bled very shortly after the beta. I keep thinking there must be a simpler term!

They did an ultrasound last Thursday, and I am not sure whether to expect one Tuesday. I would expect with such very low numbers not to be able to see anything anyway? From what the nurse was saying I am assuming I will be having a looot of betas over the next few weeks. (Hate needles). And yes, even though the doctor really doesn't seem to think it's ectopic (or maybe he's being optimistic), they ask me all the questions every time and I've heard "If you have ANY pain, go to the emergency room RIGHT AWAY" more times than I can count.

I think they call it an incomplete miscarriage. But it's really hard to say yet because it sounds like they aren't sure what is going on. When your numbers are continuing to rise it could be an incomplete miscarriage (retained tissue), molar pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, so it's very hard to say. I hope when you go back your numbers are at zero and you can finally move on from this. The waiting and the not know is always so hard.

I had a true missed miscarriage (blighted ovum) with my loss. I though everything was lovely until I went for an u/s at nearly 8 weeks and discovered there had been no growth since 4 weeks or so. My symptoms were still very strong and there was no sign that my body had picked up on the m/c. We didn't do Betas because the u/s was pretty clear but my dr indicated that based on my symptoms the #'s would still have been fairly high. I tried cytotec (orally twice) with no results. Finally did a D&C at just over 9 weeks. AF appeared almost exactly 6 weeks after the D&C and my cycles have been fine since. Good luck hun. I hope you get some resolution soon. The hardest part for me was feeling stuck in limbo.
