Ever since mid January, I have felt a strange tightening feeling in my throat. It started out very gentle and only happened once in a great while. Then eventually it started getting worse and worse and I started worrying it could be my thyroid acting up. So mid February, it was SO bad one night and I couldn't sleep at all. I woke up that morning, ran into a quick care place and told them my concern. They did blood work and scheduled me for an ultrasound on my thyroid. A few days later, I was still feeling choked and had my ultrasound. The tech told me he found a small nodule on the thyroid but didn't think it would be giving me the symptoms I was getting since it was small. Then my blood work came back a few days later as "normal." The doctor called with both results letting me know and asked me how I was feeling. I told her that I was still getting the choking/tightening feeling that comes and goes. She said she was going to refer me to an endocrinologist to check it out.

So I FINALLY got in with the endocrinologist yesterday. I procrastinated b/c I started to think it probably wasn't the thyroid and maybe just tight muscles in my throat or something (since the b/w and u/s were fine). So, I saw the doctor and told him about my 2 losses in the past 10 months. He seemed very concerned about that and felt it COULD be connected to the thyroid. He explained about anti-thyroid antibodies that I could potentially have and how thyroid b/w can come back as "normal" but it's possible to have antibodies and that having antibodies can cause recurrent miscarriages. I told him how when I was pregnant with Cade, my prenatal b/w came back as hypothyroidism initially but then when my doctor rechecked it was "normal". He seemed concerned about that as well and told me how it can fluctuate and if I have antibodies they don't show up in the normal thyroid panel my doctor did on me. And he was also concerned b/c even though my thyroid TSH is w/in "normal" lab range it is on the high end and close to being hypothyroidism (most doctors consider 1-2 to be w/in normal range and mine is way over 3).

So he is rechecking the thyroid and doing all of the same blood work I already had done in February and also doing the antibodies test. If the antibodies test comes back as high, then I will go on hypothyroid medicine. He told me that he has seen this in women with recurrent losses and that once they went on the medicine, their next pregnancies were fine. He also said if the antibodies test comes back as normal, it could be the goiter on the thyroid causing this tightening throat problem. He said 95% of the time goiters are non-cancer but it's up to me to get it biopsied right now or wait 6 months to recheck with an u/s to see if it has changed. My mom has goiters all over her thyroid and they were non-cancerous and she also has hypothyroidism so I'm not that worried about the goiter right now. He also felt the goiter and said it was soft and most of the time, cancer is hard as a rock on the thyroid.

So...now I have to wait for my blood work to come back so I can find out about the antibodies. Today I am CD9 and I usually ovulate around CD15 on average. So if the blood work is normal, hopefully I can get those results back before I O. If it comes back as high, then I will go back in to see the doc and they will put me on the hypothyroid medicine.

I will keep you guys updated. I looked up on Dr. Google today about anti-thyroid antibodies and it said if a woman has them it can cause preterm labor (which I had with Cade) and recurrent miscarriages. And I'm still getting the off/on tightening in my throat. So I am worried I could have this problem but at least I know it can be fixed with medicine if that's the case.....

UPDATE: The doctor's assistant ended up calling me today to help me get access to their website so I can check for my lab results this weekend. While I had her on the phone, I told her how I forgot to ask the doctor yesterday about TTCing this cycle and whether or not we should wait until we find out what the antibodies test reveals. She said there is no reason to wait to TTC and that if it does come back as elevated, I would just go on the medicine and would help prevent a m/c. She said all the antibodies test will do is tell them that my thyroid is in the process of failing but hasn't failed yet so she didn't see any reason to stop TTC right now. But I'm still nervous about it...

Also, she thinks the lab results will probably be ready to view on their website by tomorrow. I will keep you all posted!

UPDATE 4/9: Well looks like we will be TTC this cycle after all! They just called with the blood work results and said that everything looks fine so no need for medication! CD13 today and 1st "high fertility" day on the monitor and line getting darker on OPK... So I guess it's time to TTC again!

This is so similar to what I have been going through the last couple of weeks. I just started my thyroid meds yesterday. The doctors told me similar things. I hope that you get your bloodwork back quickly so that you will be able to TTC as soon as possible.

(((HUGS)))

I just wanted to share with you that years before we started TTC I basically got diagnosed the same way you did...bloodwork was high normal, but still normal so Dr wasn't concerned until I started having tons of symptoms - and the one that brought me in (eventually, after thinking I just had weird hoarse throat for months) was when I felt like I was having constant trouble swallowing like something was stuck in my throat.

I'm glad you got checked out by a specialist, and hopefully the nodule is nothing. While mine was eventually controlled by synthroid before we started TTCing, I know there is definitely a linkage with m/c and pre-term labor issues b/c that was the first thing both OB & RE wanted checked, and when pregnant they monitor my levels every month for a change. Mine are still kind of toward high end of normal (~3) but you'll find there's a WIDE range of Dr opinion on whether up to 4 is ok (or not)...in your case, with your history, i'd definitely push to have your levels adjusted & sustained closer to 1.5-2.0.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this - the meds will help you, unfortunately it does take awhile for the symptoms to resolve and to find the right balance/dosage. Mine took me about 6 months to completely fix, and we still tinkered with the meds for another year before it totally stabilized. Hopefully yours will be faster

Sorry to hear that Geogeek! How long did it take for the lab to process your antibodies blood test? I forgot to ask the doctor yesterday how long it will take to get the results....

Thanks so much for the info Lara! I'd much rather wait and make sure the thyroid is functioning normally before ttc again but still sucks! After yesterday i realized how mad I am at myself for procrastinating for even a few weeks :-/

This is me too! I have had hypothyroid for about 15 years and managed well with meds, including monitoring and increasing dose during pregnancies. I have never had the antibodies done, but now after having the losses, my TSH is elevated again and I am scheduled to see endocrine. Have you noticed any other symptoms of hypothyroid? I know it's so hard to get in the frame of mind that "ok, we're doing this now" and then have to switch back to the waiting game. It messes with my head so much
I hope so hard that correcting this issue leads to al of our rainbow babies. Keep us posted on how things go

Oh no!!! I'm sorry to hear daolive! The first symptom I had after the loss last June at 22 weeks, I actually gained weight after the pregnancy rather than lose it. I thought it was very strange and just kept exercising and eating right trying to get it off. Then, about 6 weeks after the loss, I started to get a very strong dizzy feeling that lasted on and off for about a month...it wasn't a normal dizzy feeling like everything is spinning feeling. More like I felt like I was falling all the time... hard to explain and not sure if that could be related. I went to the doctor b/c I thoguht it could be an ear infection. He said possibly a middle ear so he put me on antibiotics. That feeling eventually got a little better then went away. Then, pretty soon after that, my ear started ringing. And it still does off/on. I read online that tinnitus can be a hypothyroid symptom. I forgot to mention that to the doctor yesterday.

But..I finally just recently started to lose the weight from Cade's pregnancy. I've lost 7 lbs since my doc visit in mid Feb compared to what I weighed yesterday.

HOw about you? Any symptoms?

The antibody test I think took 2 days. Regular TSH only took a day. You are better than me. I am still TTC...I should stop to just make sure everything is stabilized, but my doctor didn't tell me that, so I am TTC.

Thanks for the info!! I know what you mean. Yesterday I kept going back and forth from "let's do it!" to "no let's wait!" and all night, instead of sleeping, I kept replaying my appt with the doc yesterday and thinking about it more. He never told me not to TTC ... When they call with my results I will ask them about it. Maybe I will find out monday! Then there is still time to TTC if it's fine.

I am not sure about the dizziness, but I honestly never know about the tinnitus! I have been having that recently but I wasn't really sure about it and thought I was being a hypochondriac. Well, guess I will mention it when I get the the endo. When I was first diagnosed, I gained about 15 pounds in 1-2 months time. I was exhausted and slept a lot. I finally went to the doctor because I was going to graduate and wanted to get one more appointment before going off my parents' insurance. My TSH was around 8 and my doctor didn't think it was too severe (she had patients whose numbers were up to 100). I don't remember how long it took to normalize. I have had the same lately, gained 15-20 lbs. since the September PG. But then it was the holidays, and then another loss in January, mixed with depression and I thought well no wonder I gained weight!! I am trying now to add exercise back in and have been eating better. I am always tired, but I have always been always tired.
My doc did tell me to wait for TTC until thyroid was under control and I am ok with that. I am just praying that it makes the difference this time. I hope it is a quick fix for all of us!

That's great that you have the green light to continue TTC. I know there's still uncertainty and concern, though, waiting to see what your thyroid results are, if you need medicine, if the dosage is correct, etc.etc. I wish it were easier on all of us.

Well it looks like I'm not going to get my results this weekend. I tried logging into their patient website and it says "URL expired" so I can't get into it for some reason.

So I should know by Monday!

I think we will still try. She said yesterday that if I do have antibodies I will have them for the rest of my life and all the meds would do is help it out some (wont get rid of the antibodies altogether). So I guess we will still try this cycle. I prob wont ovulate until later next week and if we happen to catch the egg, it still wouldn't implant for 7-10 days after that so there's still plenty of time to get on meds if I have to before I actually got pregnant this cycle. And at least I would have somebody monitoring levels etc and keeping an eye on everything.

Thanks for all of your responses ladies! Love ya! I will keep you posted!

It looks like I'm probably going to O later than normal this cycle. "Low fertility" on the monitor today and it's CD 11 .... Usually have a "high fertility" by now. But I'm fine with it! Gives me more time to find out the results!
