Hi everyone,

yesterday was my first OB appt at 7w5d. The exam showed a lot of blood on my cervix and the u/s showed an empty gestational sac. A missed miscarriage is what was mentioned. They did a bunch of blood work, sent me home and I'm going back tomorrow to meet with the doctor again and have more blood work. The nurse said she thought I would probably just start bleeding like a regular period but I haven't even spotted so now I'm worried that they are going to send me for a d&c. I heard those are awful, painful --- what should I expect? I'm in shock right now and just don't know what is going to happen or what to expect.

I am so sorry you are going thru this! I haven't had a d&c but I know many of the ladies here have so they can help you there.

First of all, let me say I am very sorry for what you are going through, but I know exactly how you feel, because the same thing happened to me. I was 7 wks 5 days at my first pre-natal apt (3/6). Same thing, they saw a gestational sac, and no baby. This was my second pregnancy, so that just blew me out of the water. I was expecting to go in there and see my baby's heartbeat. So, my doc talked of a "blighted ovum" "missed miscarriage" all that, but said she wanted me to come back in a week to do another u/s, but she said it didn't look good. I went back the next week, and same thing, empty sac, no changes. I was totally devastated!! I had no signs anything was wrong, no spotting, nothing, body still thinks it's pregnant. My doctor told me that waiting to miscarry natrually could take weeks, or even months. I just didn't want to go through all of that, still feeling pregnant when really I wasn't anymore. Well, technically I was, but not with a baby...So, I opted for the D&C. It was not painful. It was very easy. I went in, they put me under, I was out quickly and back home that afternoon. I had some mild cramps that day and the next, I bled somewhat like a period for a few days, then spotted for a week. I had my first AF back 5 weeks later. I have actually heard that a natural miscarriage is much more painful. But it is a very personal decision that only you can make. I needed closure, and I wanted to try again ASAP. That's where we are now. It's been 2 months since my surgery, and we are trying again.
Although my cycles are now very messed up. My last one was only 22 days. People keep telling me that you are somewhat messed up for a while after a miscarriage. I'm just hoping that we can conceive again quickly.
Definitely don't make any decisions until you are thoroughly convinced that there is no baby. Are you sure of your dates? Cause sometimes that can make a difference. And it's good that your doc drew blood for tests. Mine didn't do that, and if I knew then what I have sinced learned, I would've demanded it. If your levels aren't doing quite what they should be doing, then it's a definite sign that things aren't right.

Let me know if you need to talk. I never knew anything like this could happen. But after it happened to me, I discovered that it is actually really common. I know that doesn't help...but just know that you are not alone.

Actually, I have heard that a natural m/c is more painful than a D&C. I had a D&C and it wasn't very painful at all. I was completely out and only had some cramping for few days. I only bled for about 5 days and it was mostly spotting. With a natural m/c you have a lot more cramping and bleeding. Don't worry too much if you have to have a D&C, it isn't as bad as it seems. My whole procedure took less than 30 minutes from wheeling me out of my room to back in my room waking up. It is up to you as to what you want to do though. Most docs will give you the option of the D&C or waiting it out on your own. The other part I liked about having a D&C was that I had some control over something that I had no control over, kwim? I am sorry for your loss, hun. Some people do prefer to go naturally though so do what feels right to you.

I'm so sorry you have to go thru this.

I experienced both a natural m/c (well partially) and a D&C. I started bleeding on my own and had one horrible night of bleeding and passing clots and all that and thought I was done, but a week later I ended up in the hospital because it started again worse than that horrible night and ended up having a D&C. I really wish I'd just had the D&C to begin with. It was not painful at all. It was very quick and I only bled lightly for a few days and then spotted for a few more. My hcg was back to zero within 10days. (and I was 12W, so it was HIGH to begin with!).

Personally the physical pain from the natural m/c was 100X worse than anything I felt after the D&C. I literally felt like I was having contractions (which I guess I was).

I'm so not trying to scare you about naturally m/c. It's not as bad for some as it is for others, and since I was 12W there was a lot of 'stuff' that had to come out. I am just saying for me, D&C was a better option.
