Hey ladies, so I think we've decided to actually go ahead with the HSG. I'm super nervous, but at least we can check out my tubes. I just really hope that we can get good news! I'm hoping to have it done in March or April. Which means I have to wait longer to TTC !My question is what was it like? And do you know how much it cost? Thanks!

You are going to get a ton of different responses to if it hurt.

For some people it kills for others it is not the least bit painful.

For me... I was in between. It was just uncomfortable.

About the test itself... this was what I experienced. Mine was done at a local hospital. I went in, they called my name and then had me go to a locker room. Pants and undies came off...shirt stayed on. They gave me a robe and then I went to a semi-private waiting room. They came to get me and brought me to a huge room with tons of equipment. It was just me my doctor and another lady who I assumed was a nurse but she could have just been a tech. She had the test done herself not long before that so she was VERY reassuring.

They had me lay on a table and then put my knees up. They didn't have stirrups. That was kinda nice for a change to not feel like I am going to fall off the table butt first! Anyways... then they had me open my leggs and they inserted a small catheter in through the cervix. That was okay...no pain at all. Then they put the dye in. That part was a little uncomfortable from the pressure of the dye, but not painful. They then swung this thing over the top of my middle that was the x-ray machine. It reminded me of the dentist office when they swing that big light towards your mouth. They had me slowly roll from side to side to get the dye into both tubes. After that they took the catheter out, gave me a pad for the sticky black discharge (It looks like iodine) and sent me to get dressed. It took about 10 minutes for the test and about 20 mintes total from when we got to the hospital.

I had that black stuff coming out for a day or so. No bleeding. My tubes were open and I did conceive the cycle after that! They say it increases your chances for about 3 months.

I hope that helps.... if you have any questions... just ask

Wow, that was some great info! Thanks so much! Maybe we'll be able to start TTC after that and have it happen quickly(here's praying)!

I just went for one in November. For the most part, it was uncomfortable. There was definitely a couple of minutes where I felt EXTREME pain. I got a little dizzy afterward, but recovered quickly. I think I took tylenol or something similar beforehand as well. I had that discharge for a few days. Fortunately, my tubes were fine. Unfortunately, we haven't conceived from it and my cycles have been off since then as well. I don't know that that is typical for most people and I'm hoping I'll either get preggers soon or that my cycle will get back to normal.

I wish you the best!

I just had my HSG done the day after christmas. For me there were parts that were painful but for the most part it was all just really uncomfortable. I had to take everything off. The test itself took about 10-15 min. My doctor gave me his opion after he was done but said that the final results would be in in a few days. Some insurances cover the test but mine didnt so I'm not really sure how much it is going to cost us. You could always call your doctor to get an idea on the cost. I am currently waiting to see if I get pg this month from the test.
Just take some aleve or advil before you go that should help some with the pain and the worst part for me was the bleeding of the iodine for that whole day and some the next. Its more annoying then anything. Hope this helps. Good luck

I had my HSG done the beginning of December. For the most part it's uncomfortable, but I did have some pretty painful parts. The radiologist at the hospital did mine and she was very nice. There was a tech in there, but she just seemed awkward and new and didn't know what to do with herself. Which was fabulous to have her in my nether regions with a weird look on her face! Anyways, the cathedar kept coming out, so that was uncomfortable and the dye being injected was pretty painful IMO. The dye wouldn't go into my one ovary, but it went into the other just fine. So they gave me an injection of a muscle relaxer in hopes that it was just a muscle spasm and would flow into it. It didn't so instead I was just left with the feelings of a heavy muscle relaxer! Thank God my mom was there to drive me home!

My doctor was looking at to be sure that the lining of my uterus was thick and it was good, so I'm glad to hear that I won't have to do it again! But I'm glad that I did. Mine in all lasted about 25 mins, and I had to hang around for a little afterwards because I was a little dizzy. My insurance covered it and I haven't gotten a statement yet, so I'm not sure how much it was. Good luck!

Thanks again ladies! I'm glad I know what to expect now. I'll be calling today and asking the place that does them how much they are!
