When I wrote it, I was in contact with two other women who I knew online, so the poem is dedicated to their babies as well.
"A Mother's Unrequited Love"
In loving memory of Cora, Jules, and Trace:
Nothing can match a mother's joy
To learn there's a life inside
Nothing can compare to the pain she feels
when she discovers that life has died
Something inside you rips apart
and every part of you silently screams.
Nothing in your life seems fair anymore,
it's torn apart all of your dreams.
You have so many numberless questions,
to be answered only by the Lord above.
You ask most, "What's the reason
for a mother's unrequited love?"
As time goes by the pain lessens
but nothing can ever fill the loss.
You remember all the plans you had
for all the years you could see across.
And you hope that life goes on,
that your baby's short time isn't the end.
You hope one day you'll hold her again,
that maybe your broken heart will mend.
The human soul and heart are eternal,
that's the mercy of the Lord above.
And one day I hope to find the reason
for a mother's unrequited love.
