Is this a lame gift idea?

I have been trying to get the stuff to decorate, paint, and furnish the kids' rooms. Well I am thinking that we should give them their new rooms for Christmas. Dh thinks that it is completely lame. We would still be getting them their bikes, books, and clothes. Also I would buy all the decorations for their rooms to go under the tree. I was planning on moving them into the playroom, and moving Alex out of there. Then I can let Alex stay in ds' room while I work on dd's room. Then Alex can move into dd's room after the paint fumes are gone so I can work on ds' room. I was planning on locking the doors to their rooms, so they can't get in there until Christmas. It would be a tight squeeze for a few weeks, but we could always give them their rooms as soon as I got them done if we needed to. Then they could just wait for the decorations until Christmas. I think it would be something they would really like, but dh thinks it is a lame gift. What do you think?

That's what we're doing for the girls' big gift this year. Obviously I think it's a great idea. I used the money savings to convince DH. We were planning on doing it early next year anyway, so why not spend the money now for Christmas instead of coming up with some expensive toy and still having to decorate the room.

OMG Dh and I had the SAME argument a couple years ago. The boys wanted a room re-do so I thought that new room stuff (bedding, decorations, pillows ect) would make a great Christmas gift but DH thought that was super lame and that stuff like that should not count as gifts. I thought it was a great gift idea....

I also thought voice lessons for our oldest who loves to sing would be a great Christmas idea but again, DH says that's lame- it's just something he should get b/c that's his talent....oh well...I guess I"m lame!

Angela- lessons would be an awesome gift for Christmas! I got a clarinet one year as a gift. My parents were going to get it for me anyway because I was really good and my cheap one was holding me back, so i got it for Christmas.

I think practical gifts are fantastic! Maybe it's because we've had to be more creative with our finances in the last few years. I just hate spending money on a thing to wrap up just for the sake of having a thing to open, when you could spend the money that will be used and cherished every single day for years to come

Exactly, Courtney!!!! I feel the same way. I hate the thought of buying just for the sake of having X many gifts under the tree when there are things the kids would like to have that could make great gifts but DH insists we should just provide those things as parents...also he asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said maybe a gift card to Motherhood so I can get a few maternity things and he said "NO! That's not a Christmas present...that's a necessity..." I appreciate the fact that he thinks a gift should be not a necessity but practical things are really smart. With 10 children and one on the way, we aren't exactly made of money!!! I don't see it falling off the trees...
