Alex is 31 inches tall and 25 lbs. The doctor said that he is doing really good. Alex has a cold right now, and the doctor thinks that Alex may have asthma. The doctor gave me a prescription for albuterol to give to him at night before bed, and in the morning when he gets up with the nebulizer. If Alex isn't better by Monday then I have to take him back in. The doctor said that he could hear Alex wheezing, and that he wants me to keep a close eye on him. He also told me that I should keep the albuterol in the house just in case, so if I run out then I need to take Alex in to get more. I have never had to deal with asthma before, so this is a little scary to me to hear that Alex may have it. I got a pretty stressful call right as I walked into the doctors office, so I didn't hang out to ask questions because I had to call my mom back. I don't want to use doctor google to find out anything, so I will ask you ladies. Are there any tests they can do to find out if he has asthma? What should I look out for? Is there anything aside from the albuterol that I can do to help him breathe easier? Would a humidifier be ok? Any advice would be great. Thanks!!

I'm not sure on asthma, but I thought they usually have kids blow into a tube to see their oxygen or something like that. I could be totally wrong though...but I remember doing that at the doctor's office as a kid (I had breathing issues sometimes, but never asthma).

I'm not exactly sure either. I know my nephews have it, and have since little kids. I think it would be hard to encourage Alex to blow in a tube at this age. But, albuterol helps a ton. Sorry to not be of much help!

Jed has albuterol for when he wheezes or gets a cough. My doc never said it was asthma - but more like allergy induced wheezing. He will have breathing troubles if he gets a cough or cold. i don't know how they actually test for asthma.

I have asthma and was never tested for it. It took me awhile to get the diagnosis. Sometimes a lung function test can be run. For me it was the doctors reviewing my history with wheezing when around my triggers, my triggers, family history and the fact that I have severe allergies. Plus I was having asthma attacks. I didn't realize at first that was what was happening. But after descibing my symptoms it was determined by my doctor that I did indeed have it. Some people never get diagnosised with it until they have an attack (that recently is what happened to my cousin's little boy). I will warn you - albuterol sometimes will make a person hyper! It makes me all jittery.

It looks like he is growing good and becoming a big boy!

I have no clue. My niece and nephews have it but I have no idea how they were diagnosed...if it was an actual test that yeilded a dx or if it was just based on symptoms and elimination of other issues.
Hope Alex does well and won't need to use his albuteral...espicially in the winter weather...
