Many of you already saw this on facebook but, I wanted to let you know what is going on with Julia right now. We saw the pediatrician on Tuesday afternoon and she confirmed that something was wrong with her eye. She called the specialist first thing and we saw a great doctor at St. Louis Children's Hospital on Wednesday. We were there for several hours doing several tests and the diagnosis is a cataract in her right eye. Right now she is completely blind in that eye because the cataract is so dense. Apparently there is a blood vessel from the back of the eye to the lens that you have when you are in utero. This vessel is supposed to dissovle in the second trimester and Julia's did not.
So she is having surgery next week, probably Thursday. We can't wait because now is the time when her eyes are forming connections with her brain and right now she is not forming a connection with that right eye because it is blind. They are going to remove the top of the lens of her eye and take out the cataract and then take out the remaining peices of blood vessel that did not dissolve. This will restore sight but nothing will be at all clear because she won't have a lens anymore. So she will wear a contact in that eye for about 18 months. Should be fun putting a contact lens in an infant! After 18 months, once her eye is fully developed, she wil need another surgery to put in a lens implant. Then we can get her glasses to try and correct any remaining vision problems. It is going to be a really long journey.
I am pretty upset and scared and worried that my child is going to face challenges because of her vision. We are praying that after this process she will have close to normal vision in that eye and will have no side effects from the surgery. Thankfully her left eye is normal and she can see clearly from that eye.
Thankfully, the reflux meds and cereal in her bottles seem to be helping and she is screaming much, much less.
Would love to have all your prayers for Julia that she come through the surgery easily and that her vision corrects completely.
Glad they found out what is wrong - it does sound like it will be a long journey so sending hugs your way. KUP on how the surgery etc goes. Totally understandable you are upset and scared, anyone would be.
