So many of you on facebook already know some of this, but I thought I would give a little update on Julia.
She is now 3 months old and super cute! We found out that she will qualify for early intervention with the state for vision impairment so we should be having her assessment soon. She will be working with a vision specialist to make sure her gross and fine motor skills as well as speech/language develop normally.
We had to fight the insurance company to get them to pay for her contact lens (the initial lens was 400 bucks and each additional lens throughout her childhood is 150). Thankfully, we have an awesome doc who did a "peer to peer" phone call with a doctor at the insurance and got it approved. We will have to go through that process everytime she needs a lens, but at least it will be paid for.
We got an initial contact on Friday, but it doesn't fit well. It pops out about every 2 hours! The one time it popped out - we didn't notice immediately and couldn't find it. We searched and searched and eventually found it in the carpet near where she had been fed. I had a complete meltdown and cried because I was so overwhelmed at having to do this for 2 years. It is so stressful, constantly looking in her eye to make sure the lens is there. So we called the doc and he is having another lens custom made with a different shape to try and fit it better. Because her eye didn't form correctly, her cornea is steep and normal contacts don't stay on her eye. I am praying this next lens works because we already tried on 7 lenses before getting this one.
As soon as this next lens comes in, we will start patching. Her weak eye has already started wandering because her brain has not connected with that eye. She may need surgery to correct those muscles in the future. She will definitely need another surgery to evenutally put in a lens implant.
She is definitely my high maintenance diva! She is finally smiling a bit and trying to roll over.
If you made it through this - go get yourself a cookie!
