I went in for my 39 week appointment on Wednesday, December 30th (my birthday) and everything was great. I was dilated between 1 and 2 and soft. Just as a precaution I was sent for a growth ultrasound after my appointment. There we found out that my amniotic fluid was measuring low so I was sent back to my doctor's office to check to see if I was leaking fluid. The ultrasound measured the baby at 8 1/2 lbs.
Back at the doctor's office they took me right back which was crazy because the office was packed. My OB came in and told me that she was going to send me over right now to begin an induction. She didn't check to see if I was leaking. She said that since I was 39 weeks and 4 days that this was the best option for me. She let me go home and get my things and wanted me back to L&D at 4 pm. Wow. That was the craziest ride home for me! I grabbed my bags and headed out. When we got to the hospital they had my room ready to go and got me started on cervadil. Cervadil was used because they wanted it to ready my body. They gave me 2 doses 12 hours apart. It actually did nothing for me. The next day at noon they started pitocin at 2 ml an hour and increasing by 2 every half hour. I was doing good with that until they got it up to about 18 and I was having crazy strong contractions right after the other. At that point the gave me IV pain meds but I had to ask for an epidural. I couldn't hold out any longer. They hurt so bad and I was out of it between contractions. I was so exhausted. I had to wait an hour after the pain meds to get the epidural (which actually ended up being 2 hours) but by the time I got it, the baby's heart rate started to fall with each contraction and I was only dilated to 5 so they turned the pitocin off. After this point it really gets blurry for me. I don't remember what time it was when anything happened. There was no window so it was kind of confusing for me. I do remember getting some sleep and a new nurse and an oxygen mask and catheter. They started the pitocin and every time it would get high enough to do anything the baby's heart rate would drop so they would turn it down or off. They made me lay on my right side to help with the heart rate. I do know that they put an internal contraction monitor in me because the other one just wouldn't work right for some reason. I remember when my water broke because I felt something that was similar to a kick, and the monitor picked up the sound so we all heard it and I put my hand down and sure enough it was wet. Some time Friday morning my nurse checked me and I was dilated to 8 cm so they called my doctor to come. By the time she got there they had me doing 3 pushes with each contraction. By the way, even with the epidural and it being topped off two times by anesthesiology I could still feel the contractions!! I think I pushed for about 90 minutes before the doctor came in. Then with her I don't know how long I pushed but I remember that it was so much harder than I thought and that maybe I wouldn't be able to push my baby out. Low and behold, at 9:38 am I got the push that brought my little boy out! He had a nuchal? cord but was completely okay! He weighed in at 8 lbs 4 ounces. 21 inches long.
All in all, labor was horrible and at first I told myself that I would never get pregnant again. I guess like people say, you really do forget about the pain. I can't wait to have another baby but it wont be anytime soon. I know that I said I wouldn't miss being pregnant but honestly, I do. I can't believe my little baby is in my arms and not in my stomach. It's bittersweet. I cry sometimes when I feel of my belly now.
It was all worth it.
