About a week ago, my 12 mo. old would eat pretty much anything you'd set in front of him. Now, though, he's pretty much stopped eating. Just to give you an idea of how much he would eat a day, he'd eat 3 meals and 2 snacks consisting mainly of finger food and he would eat a full jar of 2nd foods baby food, usually some type of fruit. Now, he'll eat a few bites of baby food and mostly throw all finger food. Today, he had a few bites of banana and strawberry 3rd foods, a few bites of hamburger, 3 or 4 French fries, and a saltine cracker. He had a little bit of a stomach bug for the past two days but it didn't really slow him down all that much. I was pushing breastmilk then to keep his fluids up, but even when he would kind of express an interest in eating, he wouldn't really eat much. Should I be concerned? I kind of am, but I don't want to call the ped. until I know that something's wrong, you know? He's a very skinny kid mostly because of his food allergies and so it's especially concerning because I don't want him to lose more weight. How can I get him back on track?

My pediatrician told me that kids go through stages and right about 12 months they go through a stage where they don't eat much. Alex did that and she told me "he won't starve, he'll eat when he's hungry".

If you still have concerns then I would call his pediatrican. Good luck.

A lot of kids go through these spurts...but if in doubt, and I say this from experience, call the doctor.

That's what they are there for - they get poop calls, fever calls, rash calls, calls about fatigue, calls about loss of appetite.
They won't mind the call, honestly.

So go with your gut. We moms somehow have a sixth sense when something's not quite right with our kids.

Keep an eye open for other symptoms too - tiredness, irritability, temperature...all that stuff. Give it another day - if you're still worried, or if you think something's not quite right, then call the pediatrician.

Mahlon has gone through stages like that. He too used to eat everything you would put in front of him and now he's much more selective. He also gets tired of things if I give it to him too often. He used to always eat a banana and a piece of toast with butter on it, but now if I try to give him a banana he just smashes it up and throws it on the floor...ugh!

It's getting tougher to find things that he will eat. Anyways, I hope things improve for you and definitely call your doc if he doesn't start eating again soon.

David has gone through several stages like that. It can be so frustrating but I would still offer him food and if he wanted to eat it he would and if he didnt I would wait a little while and try again.I think that its just a phase. But when in doubt call and ask the pediatrician.

He's eating more now. I think he just wanted a change from what I was giving him and it helped that he got to go somewhere yesterday and today.
