How important are they to you? I know we all want our children to behave at the table but I'm talking stuff like no elbows on the table and such.

Dh's mom was real strict about table manners so I'm leaving it up to him.

My parents were pretty strict, but I think DH's were more laid back. So I'm not sure yet how we'll be with Connor. Of course we expect him to behave and he already does really well with that.

I am big on the no elbows on the table. I was brought up with more manners then DH. His mom chews like a cow and his dad holds his utensils like a kid. I had to teach my DH how to hold a spoon and fork. GRRR

Both my husband and I were brought up knowing that if we eat out in public, we should be on our best behavior, and at home it is a little more lax (as it should be). Hubby and I usually eat at the coffee table in front of the tv - bad habit we cannot get out of - but I wont let Connor eat or drink anywhere but the dining room table! I'm teaching him to sit still, not move or twist around, and not to bang his hands, pull on the cloth, or spit food. Toddlers are so much fun.

I think some leniency is alright at home, why must one be formal ALL the time in front of family?
But manners are important if you are out in public, or in front of company.
