Brandon has started this thing where he bangs his head on the ground. He was doing this a couple months ago but then he stopped and now he has started doing it again. Does anyone else have a kid that does this? Do you think this is something to worry about?

Lukas used to do that a long time ago. I started out thinking it was just a temper tantrum, but his speech therapist and I quickly realized it was do to him not being able to express himself. He would get frustrated and that is how he would react.

Nikolas has done this forever. Not on the ground though, he sits on the couch or the recliner and rocks himself and bangs his head on the back of the seat, sometimes until he falls asleep. DH did it when he was little, so I never thought any thing of it. Its not in frustration for Nikolas, I think its more of a comfort thing and sort of like a nervous tick. I've never worried about it.

Oh good now I feel better. I remember my little brother doing this. I asked my dad about this and he didn't remember him doing it but my dad can't remember how to spell my name so I don't really count his opinion. LOL. I saw on another website that twenty percent of kids do this so that makes me feel a lot better. Brandon doesn't do it when he is frustrated, he just does it sometimes. He has different self stimulating things he does and I think this is just another one of them.

That sounds like Nikolas. Actually I think it started with the Johnny Jump up. he loved that thing, and after he outgrew it he would jump or rock any where he could, on the couch in the rocking chair. I think it just eventually may have translated into the head banging. Actually everytime I see him do it when he's grouchy I think oh good, maybe he'll be asleep soon, and he almost always is.

When Shanley gets super frustrated, she'll hit herself on the head... I assume it's the same thing, she can't get her ideas across so I'll stop whatever I'm really doing and really work with her to get me to understand.

I have read somewhere that twenty percent of kids do this so I don't think its something to get too worried about. Brandon likes to bump heads with me too. I am the one crying cause it hurts and he doesn't even seem to be bothered by it.

Hunter used to do the same thing - he's 7 now and finally he has stopped doing it. He used to do it so hard that he'd get a headache when he wasn't getting his way. SO...when he would do it, I would wrap my arms around him from behind him (his arms were tucked down to his side) so he couldn't move. I would have to squeeze the first few times so that he'd calm down, but he eventually just stopped. I never yelled at him or said a word and it worked for me. He used to do it when he got so mad, so I told him to "beat the crap" out of his pillow instead and granted, he had gotten 4 new pillows in a short amount of time, but it kept him safe and he could take out his frustrations.
Just a suggestion - hope it helps someone.

Thanks for your advice Amy.
Brandon doesn't do this when he is angry. He is not really capable of understanding much yet. He is only two and he is very delayed with language.

I wish you a lot of luck with this one...Hunter was about 2 1/2 when he started the headbanging - he stopped for about 6 months, so we figured it was just a phase, but then he started again.
Good luck!

Hi I am chrissy I am new to the Group.
I have a 12 year son, he does rock in the car and in his chair at home. He does it more when he is upset or not getting his own way. Not to mention, he should grow out of it. He has been assessed for Autism but they reckon he is not Austistic. He was diagnosed with A mild developmental delay but a recent assessment has shown he is not elegible for Education Support in the school.
I understand fully how you feel, I feel fustrated as he is going into high school next year and I don't want him to be bullied. I am having difficulties getting him out of the house to go to school. Even the government departments are at a loss!!
I do hope this post do give you suppport that you are not alone.
Take care and have a lovely day

Welcome to the board Chrissy. Brandon hasn't been doing the head banging thing that much lately. I am hoping that it was a phase that he has outgrown. He tends to do odd things for a while and then stop doing the one odd thing and start on a new odd thing.

Hi Patty
How are you? thank you for welcoming me into the Group. I am glad that we are not alone as Jimmy can get fustrated and agressive. they even did a test for Austism and they reckon he is not Autistic and another thing he does, he stands in front of the TV and does mini bows to the TV!! and in the car he rocks to and fro and it does no good for the suspension of the car!! I really hope he outgrows this as he is in Highschool next year
Take care and have a lovely day
I really like the photos of your kids, they are adorable.

Jimmy who is 12 does that too, he used to do that a real lot when he was younger, when he was sittting on a chair and we would tell him to stop as I worry about the impact on his head.
I used to rock in my bed when I was younger but would get thumped for it!! LOL
Take care and have a lovely day

Dunno, however, when I was about 5 or 6, I used to LOVE banging my head against the wall if I was sitting right up to it. I thought it felt fabulous. Crazy me. My mom told me to stop, I was disapointed, because I loved the feeling of my head hitting the wall. You might want to see someone about the problem though, it could be something more than just enjoying the experience.

Hi when I was young I used to rock in my bed and my mum used to thump me for it.
Jimmy does the same thing and we tell him to stop as we have a two year old and she is imitating what the kids do.
I stop her doing it as I worry about the damage it could do to her head.
Hopefully Jimmy will outgrow it as he is in highschool next year.
Take care and thank you for replying.
