Hello everyone. I have to get 3 silver (amalgam) fillings replaced. I am in my 2nd trimester and my dentist insists I do it, my OB says okay, but I am still so stressed about it because of all the terrible information I find through Dr. Google.
Thank you for your reply. It's so hard to not look at all the conflicting "research" online. I was thinking of just letting the old fillings sit and waiting to get them replaced, but my OB is worried that an infection would be worse than just getting them replaced.
Honestly, the situation would have to be pretty dire for me to have fillings replaced during pregnancy.
Disturbing amalgam (silver) fillings releases a pretty decent amount of mercury into your system. We're told our whole pregnancy that we need to avoid mercury as much as possible.
I guess you need to balance the pros and cons. If it is very likely that you'll develop an infection if you don't have them removed, then it might be a better idea to get them replaced...but I would really try to put it off.
I was in the middle of having my silver fillings replaced with porcelain about 8 months before I found out I was pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant I was due to have the rest of my fillings replaced and my dentist told me to wait until after I was done with my pregnancy AND breastfeeding before we replace the rest...
Thank-you Bokkechick for the beautiful siggy!
