This is pretty much a repost from the eating disorder board, but no one really seems to be on there... at all. I'm sorry if that's not allowed, and I'll delete the other if needed.
Keep in mind that I've been recovering from anorexia and bulimia for about four years (only the last year being very earnest), and have spent the past year just trying to maintain a decent weight, which is difficult for me, even while eating healthily.
It seemed that as soon as I had an egg fertilized my body started processing food differently and I started gaining weight (with no change in eating habits). I was already slowly working on getting my weight back to something reasonable, since I dropped to 103 in February (that's at 5'7.5"). After so many years of eating poorly, my body doesn't seem to like to digest anymore, and it was taking something like 2500-2800 Calories just to maintain that weight (I also have muscles spasming constantly, which burns quite a bit; my youngest brother has this problem as well). I'd managed to get back to 115 by the beginning of June (which I suspect caused my hormones to come back stronger than they had been).
So in the last month I suddenly gained eleven pounds, which is just... absolutely terrifying when you know you hadn't been eating enough to gain that (I just found out I was pregnant on the 6th, I'll be about 5 weeks along now). I only weigh twice a month anyway, so the sudden gain was alarming. It's just as well, as my OB had told me over the phone that she wanted to see me at at least 125 by the time she saw me for my first ultrasound, but I'm afraid that it won't stop. Of course I have no intention of restricting my food while pregnant, but I'm also fairly convinced that progesterone has kickstarted my digestive abilities, and I think that I may be absorbing Calories more efficiently again and could probably scale back from my weight-gaining diet.
Should I slow the eating so that I'm gaining at a normal rate? Or was I expected to have a rush of weight pile on in the first trimester because I was underweight?
Of course I intend on asking my questions at my prenatal visit, but I'd like some insight in the meantime. How much weight did you gain during pregnancy (1st trimester? second?)? Did it seem to pile on, then peter off? Were you underweight beforehand?

first of all good job to you for over coming the anorexia/bulimia, and of course on your pregnancy!! I don't have much knowledge on how your hormones change in regards to digestion in pregnancy, but I wouldn't worry too much about the weight gain at this point, it could very well just be your body's way of telling you that this is what it needs. I don't imagine it will continue on so drastically, your body is only going to store what it needs and get rid of what it doesn't. Of course make sure the food you are eating is the healthiest possible, and try to keep your activity level up.
I wasn't under weight when I got preg, but due to nausea, carbs and a change in diet (because of the nausea I went from Vegan to non :s) I gained about 11lbs in my first trimester, which is from what I understand, a bit more than necessary. In my second trimester I gained about another 10, and now due any day, I have gained about 6 in my 3rd, tho I have stayed the same for the past 4 weeks. I know my weight gain is normal as I was at a healthy weight. So for you being underweight to begin with, gaining a bit more will be necessary, so don't worry! Your little bean needs it!!
I don't know how helpful that was but just thought I'd give you my insight
Hi there! Congrats on battling the eating disorder I am sure it is not easy and a struggle every day!
I have no experience with an eating disorder, but I am normally 112 or so at 5'4", so on the thinner side. This is my 4th pregnancy and I just wanted to reassure you that I gain a good amount of weight with each pregnancy. I usually top off at 150 or so. Right now I am 17 weeks and up to 127...so a lot in my opinion I am also not eating out of control. I feel like I am eating pretty normally and the weight is just coming on! I don't count calories or anything though..so who knows! But I am not eating ice cream 2x's a day and running to McD's all the time
The point I wanted to make is that I tend to put on the weight pretty fast because my body probably needs it to support the pregnancy/baby. The GOOD NEWS I have for you is the weight comes off FAST after I deliver...so try to keep that in the back of your head at all times. I know it is hard watching those numbers on the scale keep climbing...I struggle with it and I don't have an eating disorder. I just wanted to give you some reassurance (((HUGS))) Best of luck with your pregnancy!
