If you received a homemade gift for your baby (as opposed to something on your registry), would you be happy with it? What gifts do you think are ok to be homemade? Are there any gifts that you think absolutely should not be homemade?

First the disclaimer that of course I am grateful for everything and thank the giver profusely.

I think baby blankets, whether knitted or sewn are always awesome. Clothes could be hit or miss...there are always some godawful things like those fabric covered frilly photo albums like some people make. But I really can't think of much else? Thankfully the diyers I have seen usually stick to the blankets.

I am grateful and appreciative of all gifts. Homemade ones are really special because I know that person put their own time and effort into making the baby something.

I agree with sk8ermaiden though, blankets are awesome. I think clothing is really hit of miss due to sizing issues, fabrics may not be compatible with a child's skin, and given how subjective style is. But that doesnt mean you dont accept it, your child gets the picture taken in it for whoever, and you pack it away.

I would love some homemade gifts for the baby, but I've heard of some that probably shouldn't have been done, like hand-made cribs or other furniture. Something like that I don't think is very appropriate (unless the recipient OKs it ahead of time) for safety reasons and it might not go with any of the other furniture, although I would of course appreciate the thought, time, and love that went into it! But if I do get anything homemade, I'd rather get things like blankets, clothes, or stuffed animals.

I wanna see those photo albums... maybe I can make them for my family who picks on me for making so much stuff myself

I never thought of anyone making furniture... that's one I would be a little worried about too. No one in our family really makes stuff themselves, except for me, and our family members do not like ANY homemade gifts, so I can only make stuff for us and a few of our friends. I like seeing that you ladies do like homemade gifts! It is so difficult to have people who would rather you spend $5 for a poorly made gift than $5 and time making them the same thing in better quality.

I actually really love homemade gifts - I have some really crafty friends! (Plus it means they took time and effort just for my gift, which as corny as it sounds, makes it extra special) Now, if it was made from clearly crappy material that would be painful for the baby (cheap yarn for a blanket etc) then that would kind of make the blanket pointless. It is the effort that counts though!

not gonna lie, would depend what it was, and all that. yep I'm a snob

no seriously a knttied/crocheted blanket for baby, if done nice is good, but if it wasn't that great so I couldn't really use it, then no. not really. unless of course a younger cousin made it and it was the thought that counts.

One of my friends knitted a baby blanket for Dalton, and I'll admit - I used it as decoration. I don't get to see her often, she lives far away, and I was blown away that she sent a gift. It was such a thoughtful and caring act on her part. No way in heck was I going to let my baby get it all gross.
