In all the hustle and bustle of getting ready for your first child, there's one REALLLY important thing that too many people overlook: making a will and naming a guardian for your child(ren).
I know it's morbid, but so is buying life insurance and so many other things we do. And, yes, it can be difficult to think about. But PLEASE, force yourself to put some serious thought into who you would want to bring up your kids in the event of some sort of catastrophe. Talk to a lawyer and get it in writing.
We spend so much effort on things that don't matter in the long run: the nursery theme and which diapers and so many minor details. Because they're fun and we enjoy doing them. But this is sooooo much more important.
And you'll probably never need it. But do it anyway; you'll sleep better at night!!!
WIFE TO PETER
MOM TO BRIAN (6-18-98)
I'm due in Oct. with my first and we are buying additional life insurance in August for both of us... luckily my insurance company will insure you while you're pregnant... and then drawing up our will later in October, after the baby arrives, since that will be our primary motivation for making one. We want to make sure it's clear who will raise our children in the event that something happens to the two of us. And you know, I thought it would be morbid, but I am finding that our planning and preparation is actually making me feel better about our future. I don't have to worry about whether the children will be able to go to college or who will raise the children. It's all done ahead of time.
