Is anyone else a teacher?? It suuure makes it hard to think of names that don't remind you of some kid with issues or who will probably end up in jail someday.. haha kidding. sort of..
Anyway, I really like a few boy names and I'd like to bounce them off of you..
Please let me know what you think of each of the following names:
Nixon
Braxton
McLaren
(And bonus if you're Canadian or Australian or other since I'd like to know what non-Americans think of 'Nixon' in particular .. I'm Canadian and I wonder if/how badly people here would actually associate the name to the president) .. I like it because it's almost my maiden name and it sounds good with our last name. BUT I don't want to have to add "no, we didn't name him after the U.S. president" every time I introduce him.
I like the name Braxton. Being from the US I def would think of the president everytime I heard the name Nixon. But thats just because I hear it all the time associated with the former president.
I like Braxton the most though I do somewhat think of Braxton Hicks. I think Nixon the president immediately. And my husband is a teacher (as is one of my best friends) so a lot of names are eliminated that way

Thanks for the input so far!
I thought so about Nixon - and for Americans, it's always a negative association, right?
(Sorry I don't know too much about him besides a bit about the Watergate thing)
This is good to discuss! Keep it coming!
P.S. Nicknames!
I forgot to mention that the only problem with McLaren is a nickname - I do NOT like "Mack" ... so .. hmm.
But I like Nix or Brax for the other two.

Considering people tend to only mention or remember the bad things about people, I would have to say it would be a negative association. And the fact his face is a mask you see in robbery movies and such a lot. LOL
Braxton makes me think of braxton hicks...
Nixon... DOES make me think of Nixon, the president, but that said I do know a[n Australian] lady, who named her first son Nixon...
McLaren... makes me think of the McLaren racing team, and McLaren baby equipment... lol
I do like Nixon and Braxton is on the okay list too.. but McLaren is too surname for me
I actually said to myself that it is good that like 90% of my students are hispanic, cuz if two incredibly white people named their kid Arnulfo or Roberto, it would be stupid! lol (Unless we were like Italian, but we are boring old people from the U.S.)
Courtney picked a name of one of her classmates actually though and it ended up on our final list of boys names.
I like Braxton best, I also like Nixon but do think of the president when I hear it. I am not a teacher but DHs best friend is and we always run our name choices by him (because he is here every darn day LOL) but he always says "no that name reminds me of a student and ......" (insert negative comment LOL) I have told DH to stop telling him our names
I like Braxton too....I do like McLaren because it reminds me of Formula One racing , but I dont care as MUCH for Nixon because of the president association. Now, I dont know how good or bad he was (besides the watergate scandal), but thats just the first person I think of when I hear that name.
Awesome input.... thanks!
I'm impressed with the number of you who know about F1 racing (McLaren)! That's kind of why we like it though! On our very first date (blind date!), DH and I found that we shared a love of F1 and that's partly what got our ball rolling since it's not the most common sport to have in common!
Does anyone else have a child with a small 'c' in their first name? (Mc...") Does it make paperwork stupid?
Please keep your opinions coming!
I think Braxton is fairly safe (besides Braxton Hicks or Toni Braxton), but nothing like Nixon.
If you saw Nixon written or heard it spoken, would you think we named our child AFTER the president or would you think it's just another name/coincidence?
Well I am a teacher and I am definitely struggling with name associations. Plus, it helps me see how popular some names are. (One of my classes right now has four Taylor's in it: two girls and two boys!)
Being from the US I hear Nixon and think of the president. (I also think of it as more of a last name.) Since I am pregnant, I hear Braxton and think "Hicks" but I think that's not the normal reaction. I like Braxton the best of the three.

Out of the list, I like Braxton the best. Nixon isn't terrible but if you're thinking of nicknames, I think Nix is worse than the association with the president but I see that no one else thinks that so maybe that's just me.

my grandfathers name was James McLaughlin ******, so the little c was in his middle name but I don't recall any issues with it although it was only his middle so I don't know? I think it would be ok?....... There is a mama in Feb 08 PR with boy named Braxton and he is a cutie so when I hear that name I think of him not Braxton Hicks LOL

DITTO!
But, maybe if you spelled it Nickson it wouldn't get that connotation all the time...???
