So yesterday I took Harleigh to her pedi for a weight check. She was 16 pounds 11.5 ounces. We talked about how she won't eat and cries if she does and even if she doesn't. The fact that she won't sleep through the night and has the worse diarrhea ever. We finally decided to go ahead and do lab work. He has been hemming and hawing since she was 6 months old. But what made him decide to go ahead with is the fact that she didn't even get longer from her 12 month appointment. So he ended up having us see a Gastroenterologist because he believes she has Celiac disease. And after seeing the GI, she agrees. So we got sent for lab work, and after 2 sticks, they got enough for the celiac test but not everything else. And we have to get a stool sample once a day for 3 days to make sure she doesn't have a parasite or anything. If the tests come back that she has Celiac disease they will have her get an endoscopy to check the extent of damage it has caused since she has been untreated this whole time. And after that, then we can switch her diet to gluten free. They want her on normal food if she gets the endo because they need to see how its irritating her and effecting her. So god only knows how much longer I have to deal with the most unhappy baby on the planet. I know she hurts and its breaking my heart because there is nothing I can do.
Please keep your fingers crossed that we get results quickly!

Poor little baby! But if it is Celiac disease, at least they have found out the reason for Harleigh's weight gain issues & other issues - and that it's treatable with diet rather than shots or meds. I see so many gluten free foods out there, what a relief that it's becoming more common to see those around!

Hope they get it figured out soon! If that is what it is, they will have caught it early - she has only been being exposed to wheat since she stared on baby foods likely, as most infant formulas no not contain wheat/gluten. You can have the celiac gene, but the disease itself isn't triggered until there is exposure to wheat/gluten. What ever damage there is (if that's what they find) is also treatable and can heal with a change in diet. And it would be an answer to what has been going on all this time. I have a ton of resources that I can send your way if you are interested. Our whole family is gluten free for a variety of reasons, so I am getting to be quite the expert on shopping and making substitutions.

I'm glad the dr's are taking her not eating seriously. It seems almost cruel to have to keep her on her current diet when they think they know what is going on. What would switching hurt? Can you take her back to having formula? I would be going nuts if I had to go through what you are. Big Hugs to you and Harleigh.
